FIT Comes Up Short at Belmont Abbey, 11-6
BELMONT, N.C. (Men’s Lacrosse) – Patrick Manning’s goal at 6:12 of the third quarter trimmed Belmont Abbey’s (4-7) lead down to two, but the Crusaders scored four of the last five goals to win 11-6 over Florida Tech (2-11) Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Manning finished the game with two goals on five shots. Ryan Bailey, Matt Durand, Christian Isola and Billy McClellan also found the back of the net one time.
Belmont Abbey held a 3-0 lead less than four minutes into the game. The Panthers would quickly regain focus as Manning and Durand cut their team’s deficit to one. However, the Crusaders’ Tanner Scharr netted his first of four goals with 1:01 to play in the first quarter.
The visitors were down by four with 13:45 remaining in the third. Isola and Manning made it a two-goal game in favor of the opposition, however, that was as close as FIT would get the remainder of the game.
Mason Cook faced 42 shots in goal, making 19 saves and recording a team-high 10 ground balls.
Belmont Abbey scooped up four more loose balls, 34-30, was successful in 19 of its 23 clearance opportunities and forced 21 Panther turnovers.
FIT will conclude its regular season with a 7 p.m. game at Florida Southern on Wednesday. A live stats link will be available at FloridaTechSports.com.
