Bolhuis, Menendez Selected Panther Student-Athletes of the Week
MELBOURNE, Fla. (Athletics News) – Florida Tech freshman Lauren Bolhuis and junior Ricky Menendez have been tabbed this week’s Panther Student-Athletes of the Week for the period of Sept. 17-23. Bolhuis is a freshman business major from Rochester Hills, Mich. Menendez is a junior business administration major from Parkland, Fla. Bolhuis played in all 220:00 minutes of Florida Tech’s two double overtime draws. The freshman anchored the back line at the right back position as the defense allowed just six shots, three on goal in that time span. Against Eckerd, Bolhuis did not allow the Tritons to get any scoring chances until the 83rd minute, when Eckerd registered its first shot of the game. Eckerd only registered two shots, one on goal in 110 minutes. Again, on Saturday, Bolhuis shut down reigning Sunshine State Conference Champion Saint Leo. The Lions were held without a shot until the 25th minute and only registered four shots, two on goal in the game.
Menendez finished a throw-in set piece in the 59th minute to give Florida Tech a 1-0 victory over Saint Leo. Menendez headed in the game-winner just inside the six-yard box off an FIT throw-in by Robbie Russell. The header was set up by Drake Hillman, who flicked the throw-in to the junior’s head. The Panthers jumped Saint Leo in the conference standings and are still unbeaten on the season at 5-0-2 (1-0-1 SSC). |
