No. 5 Softball Tames the Mocs

Florida Tech pushes its win streak to five straight

LAKELAND, Fla. – The newly minted No. 5 Florida Tech softball team looked to push its win streak to five straight in a doubleheader against Florida Southern. The Panthers were successful in their quest as they outscored the Mocs 15-1 (8-0 and 7-1) over the two games.

Shanysse Emerenciana led the Panthers at the plate as the senior went 4-7 with two runs, one double, one walk and two stolen bases. Shanysse's twin Xiarysse Emerenciana also was big for the Crimson and Gary as she tallied five runs over the course of the doubleheader.

Melanie Murphy (19-5) continued her dominance as she tossed her 16th complete game, which is sixth in the Sunshine State Conference. During her time in the circle, Murphy did not allow a single run and only five hits in seven innings.

The game looked like it was a pitcher's duel after the first two innings as neither team managed to break the scoreless tie. However, that all changed in the top of the third when a single by Cheyenne Nelson scored Mikayla WesselVanessa Rubio would get an elusive steal of home plate for the team's second run of the night. Another single later in the inning, this time by Tina Velazquez Rolon, tacked on two more runs as Nelson and Xiarysse trotted across the bag to make it 4-0.

Tech tacked on two more runs in the fourth as Rubio's shot to center field allowed Wessel and Xiarysse to cross home safely. Xiarysse would score her three run of the game in the sixth thanks to a Jaden Kline double. This made the score 7-0 as the game headed into the final inning.

The final run of the night came in the top of the seventh when a fielder's choice pushed Shanysse across the bag. This ended the scoring in game one as Florida Tech won, 8-0.

Game two had Jordan Lawlis (6-2) in the pitching circle and she too had a complete game, her third of the year. She pitched six complete innings and only surrendered one run on six hits with four strikeouts.

This second game started out eerily similar to game one as it was scoreless through two. That again changed in the top of the third when a double by Kline got Xiarysse to score. The Mocs did strike back in the bottom half of the inning to make it 1-1.

However, the tie did not last for long as a bases-loaded walk got Melinda Rule to first then she baited the catcher to attempt to throw her out at second, in which she failed to do, which got the second Panthers' run to score on that play.

Wessel aided in the next run as she reached on a fielder's choice that got Tori Szrom home. The final run of the fourth came on a Rubio fielder's choice that got Wessel over the plate to make it 5-1.

The final two runs of the game came in the sixth as both Nelson and Rubio earned another run for themselves. This closed out the scoring for the evening as the Panthers won the second game, 7-1.

Florida Tech will close out the series Friday, April 19, when the team takes the field for a 10 a.m. ET start. This change is prompted by the weather-related issues the area is expected to receive over the course of Friday afternoon.
