Alexa Flutie-Sumner was named head coach of the Florida Tech cheerleading and dance program in 2015.
In 2020, the program won championships in three events at the 2020 International Cheer Union (ICU) University World Championships, held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at the Walt Disney World Resorts. The cheer program experienced its greatest success in national or international competition that weekend as the Panthers claimed a world title in the Elite Small Coed Team Cheer, Dance Team and the Dance Team Pom Doubles competitions. Additionally, the team placed third overall in the Grand Championship Final Standings.
In 2018, the first collegiate debut for the cheer and dance program at the national level, Florida Tech's Fever Dance team finished just five points shy of the finals at the 2018 UDA College Nationals held at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex. The Panthers finished the competition ranked 8.5 out of 10, and cumulatively scored 93.59 points out of 100, which left them only five points away from making the final’s qualification. In the Spirit Video, which shows community involvement and school spirit throughout the year, Florida Tech took home a perfect score, as they reached the full allotment of 15 points.
Flutie-Sumner is a 2010 graduate of Dean College’s world-renowned Palladino School of Dance. She was a member of the San Diego Chargers cheerleading squad and the Charger Girls during her career.
