Position Responsibility: Tight Ends
Jayson Martin enters his seventh year at FIT and his fifth season as Florida Tech’s offensive coordinator.
Under Martin's tutelage, the Panther offense has become one to be reckoned with. FIT had seven All-Gulf South Conference honorees from the offensive side of the ball. Kevin Delgado, Gabe Hughes and Kenny johnston locked up CCA All-Super Region 2 laurels, while the trio was joined by Antwuan Haynes in being selected as Don Hansen All-Super Region 2. Hughes was also tabbed Honorable Mention All-American by D2Football.com.
The 2014 version featured the GSC Co-Offensive Player of the Year in wide receiver Xavier Milton, the GSC Offensive Freshman of the Year in quarterback Mark Cato and the conference's leading rusher in Trevor Sand. In total, FIT racked up well over 5,000 yards of total offense and averaged 35.6 points per game.
Previously, he was the offensive coordinator for head coach Steve Englehart at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology from 2008-09 before inheriting the program in 2010 as interim head coach.
In Martin’s debut season as the offensive play caller for Rose-Hulman, the team set 15 offensive individual and team records. Six members of the offensive unit earned All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference accolades in 2008, including quarterback Derek Eitel winning the conference offense player of the year award.
After Englehart was named the offensive coordinator at NCAA Division I Indiana State University in 2010, Martin was tabbed as the interim head coach and led the Fightin’ Engineers to their fourth consecutive winning season at 6-4.
His connection to the Panthers’ coaching staff expands beyond Englehart. Before his stint at Rose-Hulman, Martin was the offensive coordinator for former Director of Football Operations John Thomas, while Thomas was the head football coach at Melbourne’s Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy.
Martin earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Kentucky State University in 2000. While working towards his degree, he was a four-year letterwinner on the football team, competing on the Pioneer Bowl championship team in 1997.
