ESPN3 to Cover Panther vs Laker Showdown

No. 4 Grand Valley State hosts FIT at GSVU Soccer Field

MELBOURNE, FLA. (Women's Soccer) - Featured on ESPN 3 TV, Florida Tech's showdown against No. 4 Grand Valley State will air tomorrow night at 7 p.m. ET.

Heading into the tomorrows matchup, the Panthers (5-3-2) look to knock off a top team inside of the United Soccer Coaches Rankings, as a No. 4 GVSU sits at 10-2 overall with losses coming early in the season to Bellarmine and a previously No. 3 ranked Columbus State. Since the two losses, the Lakers have been on a 10-game winning streak, where they have handily shutout all of their opponents.

In the team's last meeting that stems back to the 2016 season, the Lakers entered Melbourne turf on a 32-game unbeaten streak from 2015, before Florida Tech handed them their first loss of the season, 2-1. The only other loss GVSU suffered that year came from the No. 1 seed Western Washington in the National Championship.

Looking to repeat last year's fortune, the Panthers must slow down a high-powered Laker offense that has been averaging 3.92 goals per game, and 21.9 shots respectively. In addition, GVSU has put up 82 corner kicks thus far, and has held their opponents to only 22.

Individually, the Lakers post several threats on offense, but heavily rely on senior forward Gabriella Mencotti, who leads the team and Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in goals (16), points (36), and shots (81).

Defensively, the Panthers will look for a big performance out of their back line and red-shirt senior goalkeeper Karlyn Prisco, who currently sits in fourth for total saves (44) inside of the Sunshine State Conference leader board. The Rockledge-native also sits in first for shutouts per game average with .400.

Offensively, the Panthers will face a tenacious defense that has only allowed seven goals the entire season, which all came during the team's first two losses. Since the 0-2 start, the squad has held every opponent scoreless.

In order to put points on the board, the Panthers need to establish an offensive tempo and early presence in the attacking third, while trying to hold continuous pressure against the Grand Valley defense. During the contest, FIT will need all midfielders and forwards to pose offensive threats, but will look for its playmakers to come up big in crucial moments.

The Panthers have a mixed squad consisting of season veterans and newcomers, but are well coached by Dustin Smith and Jessica Monarch, who have prepped the team for the game well in advance.

Florida Tech has a good chance to pull away with a win if they can stick to the game plan and be fundamentally sound throughout the course of the match.
