Panthers Rout Wildcats for First Win of Season

Five players score in double-figures as FIT blows out JWU 107-67 on Tuesday

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Florida Tech men's basketball team (1-4) picked up its first win of the season against Johnson and Wales (1-5) Tuesday evening, riding its high-powered offense to a 107-67 blowout win over the Wildcats at the Clemente Center.

Five Panthers reached double-figures in the victory. Jordan Majors led the way with 29 points on 9-for-17 shooting and a 7-for-7 performance at the free throw line to go along with six assists. Sam Daniel finished with 22 points, his fifth 20-plus point game of the season, while Michael Milligan recorded a season-best 20 points and five rebounds.

Valur Valsson and Richard Coil each registered double-doubles in the game. Valsson notched season-bests in both points (17) and assists (14) against the Wildcats, while shooting an efficient 5-for-8 from the field and 4-for-7 from beyond the arc. Coil recorded 10 points on 4-for-5 shooting and 13 rebounds.

As a team, FIT made 57.1 percent from the field and 47.9 percent from three point range, both season-highs. JWU was limited to 35.5 percent shooting and 31 percent from behind the arc.

The Panthers outscored the Wildcats in the paint, 30-22, and off turnovers, 24-10. FIT finished with a season-best 32 assists in the contest and won the battle on the glass, 37-25.

The Wildcats jumped on the Crimson and Gray early and led by six, 10-4, just over four minutes into the game thanks to a pair of treys by Nick Preradovic, who paced JWU with 18 points.

FIT rattled off eight straight points and took its first lead of the ball game, 12-10, on a fast break layup by Majors with 15:05 remaining in the first half. The teams exchanged baskets over the next few minutes before the score eventually reached 20-20 following a three-pointer by Preradovic.

A three-point basket by Daniel on the ensuing possession ignited a 27-5 run that gave the Panthers a 22-point lead, 47-25, with 4:26 to go in the half. FIT built its advantage to 61-33 on a three-pointer by Milligan just before halftime.

The Panthers continued their onslaught in the second half, outscoring the Wildcats 26-12 to grab its largest lead of the game at 42 points, 87-45, with less than 12 minutes to go in the contest. JWU was able to cut its deficit to 95-65 with 6:30 remaining before FIT closed the game on a 12-2 run to win by the 40-point margin.
