MELBOURNE, Fla. (Softball) - After a long weekend at Nancy Bottge Field, the Panthers were dealt their only loss of the tournament after a hard fought battle against 4th ranked Armstrong State. The Panthers now advance to 9-4 with a home record of 5-3 after three straight consecutive weekend tournaments.
Leading on offense for the Panthers was
Krista Patterson, she concluded the game going 2-for-2 at the plate with one RBI while fellow teammate
Hailey Leonard ended the match with a 1-for-2 performance and one RBI. Other contributing efforts went to
Alexus Smith and
Vanessa Rubio for back to back singles in the bottom of the seventh that helped load the bases to give FIT it's last chance at making run. Defensively, FIT collected 21 put outs to increase the team's fielding percentage to .965. In the circle, Rachel Pence was credited for her second loss on the season, now with a record of 6-2.
After two scoreless innings, the Crimson and Grey opened up the score at the bottom of the third with a
Karina Suicava single down the left field line. Soon after, Florida Tech scored off a throwing error by Armstrong's third-baseman which allowed Suicava to score. With Patterson in the box, a sac-fly to the left field put the Pirates at a 2-0 deficit.
Forwarded to the bottom of the fifth and sixth inning, ASU generated two home runs to overlap Florida Tech 4-2. After a scoreless top of the seventh, FIT was in desperate need of a score. Fortunately, the Panthers recorded three consecutive singles to load the bases. With the Panthers clean up hitter at the plate, Leonard hit a grounder to second that allowed Smith to head home. Despite the series of hits, FIT fell short after a 4-3 ground out that left two runners on base and ended the game. The Pirates ended up sneaking away with a 4-3 victory.
Florida Tech returns to the playing field on Tuesday Feb. 19 for a double header road game against Valdosta State. The both games will be hosted at the Steel's Diamond at with the start time set for 2 p.m. ET. Fans, follow the live statistics at http://www.sidearmstats.com/valdosta/softball/.
