Ashle Thompson paced FIT with 12 points and seven rebounds in victory over Tampa

MELBOURNE, Fla. (Women's Basketball) - Ashle Thompson recorded a season-high 12 points and Florida Tech (12-13, 7-10 SSC) earned an important 58-54 victory over Tampa (15-10, 10-7 SSC) in Sunshine State Conference action at the Clemente Center.

Thompson went an impressive 6-of-7 from the field for her 12 points, while also hauling in a season-best seven rebounds and two assists in 25 minutes of action. DeLise Williams also notched double-digits points with 11 to go along with three rebounds and three assists. Aniquah Swan added eight points and four boards. Three other Panthers contributed seven points each in the win.

Three Spartans finished in double-digits, led by Morgan Lumb's 18 points and six rebounds. Elena De Alfredo added 15 points and Karma Jeremie recorded a double-double on 13 points and 10 boards.

It was about equal in the shooting department for both teams with Tampa (46.7 percent) holding the slight edge over FIT (46.0 percent). The Panthers won the rebounding battle 28-26.

Markeema Crawford had a strong start to the game, scoring five of her seven total points in the first quarter to help FIT grab a 10-9 lead heading into the second frame.

The Panthers led through much of the second period but a three pointer by Lumb gave Tampa a 19-18 edge with 3:24 remaining in the half.  However, FIT regained the lead on a put-back by Thompson and two free throws by Williams to take a 22-19 advantage into halftime.

FIT opened the second half with a 12-4 run to build its lead to as much as 11 on a layup by Swan at the 3:41 mark of the third quarter. The Spartans answered with a run of their own, outscoring the Panthers 14-5 to cut the deficit to just two, 39-37, as the teams prepared for the fourth period.

It was back-and-forth affair in the fourth quarter with the two teams exchanging baskets. Faith Sanders gave UT a 48-45 advantage just before the midway point of the period but the Panthers responded with a 10-3 run that helped them take a 55-51 lead with less than two minutes left on the clock.

Lumb's three-pointer on the ensuing Tampa possession made it 55-54 with 1:42 remaining. However, Thompson knocked down a long jumper on FIT's next time down court to push the lead back to three with 47 seconds left. After stopping the Spartans' on their next possession, the Panthers were able to hold on for their seventh SSC win of the season.
