MELBOURNE, Fla. (Women's Soccer) - Florida Tech (4-1-1, SSC 1-0) opened up the conference play in thrilling fashion, as the Panthers clutched their first SSC win over the Eckerd Tritons (1-3, SSC 0-2) at Rick Stottler field on Saturday night.
Â
Junior forward
Keira McCarthy snagged the first goal of the evening, slipping it past the Tritons goalkeeper off a pass from
Mary Watson. Putting the game at distance, Red-shirt junior midfielder
Taylor Eller scored on a crossed ball from
Maria Munoz that ricocheted off the goal post and before putting into the net.
Karlyn Prisco earned her third seasonal shutout, collecting four saves in the weekend outing.Â
As a team, the Panthers tallied 11 shots to the Tritons 9, and forced Eckerd's goalkeeper to make two saves.
"Tonight was a great result for us against a very tough opponent, said Head Coach
Dustin Smith.  "Eckerd is extremely well coached and disciplined. We were fortunate not to give away an early goal, which allowed us to stay in the game. During the second half we had some players step up big, granting us the opportunity to put two into the back of the net. It feels great to get our first conference win."
In the first half, both teams created pressure, as they recorded one shot apiece within the first 20 minutes of play. For the remainder of the first half, the score remained unchanged due to outstanding defensive performances on both sides of the bal. Offensively, FIT amassing three shots, while Eckerd notched five.
Entering the second half with a bare scoreboard, the Panthers broke through the score at the 67-minute mark, as McCarthy clinched her second tally of the year with a header that was put into the right side of the Tritons net off an assist from red-shirt senior Watson.
One minute after the Crimson and Gray breakaway, Eller tabbed her second goal of the season to put Florida Tech ahead 2-0.Â
The Panthers will return to Rick Stottler Field on Wednesday night to face the Nova Southeastern Sharks. Teams will line up at 7 p.m. ET.
