MELBOURNE, Fla. - With two weeks remaining until post-season play, Florida Tech (10-13, SSC 7-10) managed to top the Barry Buccaneers (15-10, SSC 8-9) in overwhelming fashion, 60-45 on Wednesday night at the Clemente Center.
Leading the Panthers in scoring, senior DeLise Williams drained a team-best 17 points during the night outing. With her performance on the hardwood, the Panther now ranks 12th overall for points within the SSC leader board, totaling 292.
Joining in double-digit scoring, fellow senior Markeema Crawford knocked down 10 points for Florida Tech on a 2-for-4 shooting effort from the floor.
Adding eight points to the Crimson and Gray total, junior Tereza Sedlakova ended the midweek outing with one block, three rebounds and one assist. Senior Kailyn Ebb joined Williams for a team-high eight boards, while sinking eight points and grabbing one steal.
As a team, the Panthers held a 16-7 advantage over the Bucs for second chance points, as well as a 12-4 edge in points off the bench. Additionally, the Crimson and Gray lineup converted 18 Barry turnovers into 19 points. From the floor, Florida Tech tallied a 30.5 shooting percentage and bested the Bucs 83.3 to 60 from the charity strip.
The Panthers set the pace quickly, jumping out to a 7-3 run at the 5:31 mark in the first period. However, Barry rallied back and eventually closed the first stanza with a tied score, 12-12. In the second quarter, Florida Tech put the Bucs at distance once more, as the Melbourne squad took a seven-point lead with 4:06 remaining, 23-16. From there, FIT held Barry to solely five points to enter the locker rooms ahead, 29-21.
Returning from halftime, Barry wrestled back to close the gap by two, 27-29, but the Panthers took a 7-0 run in at the three-minute mark to overlap Barry, 36-27. The Crimson and Gray offense kept rolling, and Florida Tech entered the final period ahead by double-digits, 42-31. Although Barry momentary shortened the deficit by seven, the Panthers mercilessly rolled past the Miami Shores squad with a 10-2 run to wrap up the victory, 60-45.
