FIT Opens Softball Classic Strong

Krutsinger earns her second seasonal win

MELBOURNE, Fla. - Opening the annual 2018 Softball Classic, Florida Tech (5-5) ends the day with a split. In the first game, FIT dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 22 St. Mary's (7-7), while in the non-conference game against Lynn (5-4), the Panthers triumphed with a thrilling 2-1 victory.

In the circle, juniors Melanie Murphy (2-3) and McKenzie Krutsinger (2-0) had a stellar performance. In the game against the Rattlers, Murphy allowed no runs in seven complete innings pitched and struck out six of the 32 batters faced. Taking the circle against Lynn, Krutsinger earned her second win after holding the Fighting Knights lineup to solely seven hits and no runs.

At the plate, sophomore Ally Carver led the Panthers offense with a 3-for-7 performance, while freshman Mikayla Wessel ended the Friday outing going 2-for-7 in the box with one RBI. Also chipping in, Veteran Jessica Callahan drove in one RBI (2-for-5) on the day.

As a team, Florida Tech compiled 12 hits, 2 RBI, and 42 put-outs.

In the first event, both dugouts remained scoreless for four innings, until the St. Mary's offense burst in the top of the fifth to bring home its first run and overlap the Panthers, 1-0. However, a persistent Crimson and Gray offense managed to tie the game 1-1, after Wessel drove a single up the middle.

Unable to tame the Rattlers bats, the Texas based lineup broke through the score in the top of the sixth, putting Florida Tech at distance with two more runs, 3-1. From there, FIT struggled to move its runners around the bases, and eventually fell to St. Mary's, 3-1.

Entering the second match up against Lynn, the Panthers clawed their first run in the top of the third, where Callahan drove a ground ball to the opposite field to push FIT ahead, 1-0. In the fourth, Florida Tech set the pace after enlarging its stretch by one on a Lynn error, bringing one runner home to make it a 2-0 game.

Although the Boca Raton lineup closed the gap by one in the final innings, Krutsinger quickly ceased the Fighting Knights come back and sealed the win for FIT, 2-1.

Tomorrow, Florida Tech will take the field against No. 22 St. Mary's at 10 a.m. ET, followed by a contest against the Flagler Saints at 3 p.m. ET.
