SAINT LEO, Fla. - Officially opening conference play, Florida Tech (7-7, SSC 0-1) missed by a whisker a 1-0 decision to No. 10 Saint Leo (10-3, SSC 2-2) on Friday night at University Softball Stadium.

Melanie Murphy (3-4) allowed solely seven hits through the entire seven innings pitched and struck out two of the 31 batters faced. Inside the SSC, Murphy currently ranks third on the leaderboard with an outstanding 1.26 ERA over 44.1 innings pitched, and places ninth overall for strike outs with 25. Additionally, the FIT pitching staff sits atop of the SSC leaderboard with a conference-best 1.86 cumulative ERA in 13 games played.

Makayla Palmer led the Crimson and Gray offense to end the night outing with a 2-for-3 performance. Behind her, fellow teammate
Xiarysse Emerenciana recorded one double on two appearances inside the box.
As a team, Florida Tech recorded three hits, one stolen base and 20 putouts. After today's game, the Panthers hold the fifth spot in the SSC with a .956 fielding percentage.
In the first game of the series, pitchers dominated for five straight innings, as both lineups were unable to place runners in scoring position to enter the sixth with the score tied, 0-0.
In the top of the sixth, Emerenciana brought the Panthers on base with a double to the left field. With a runner on second,
Mikayla Wessel flawlessly dropped a sac bunt towards third base and allowed Emerenciana to reach third. However, the FIT offense was unable to push her home and eventually closed the frame tied, 0-0.
As the bottom of the sixth and top of the seventh went blank for both dugouts, the Lions took the game in the final offensive frame. With one out on the board, Saint Leo managed to place runners at first and third, and sealed the win with a sac fly to left field, 1-0.
Tomorrow, the Panthers will return to University Softball Stadium to close out the weekend series with a doubleheader against the Lions. The first game is set for 1 p.m. ET.
