No. 6 Florida Tech Defeats No. 13 Limestone on Road

Sara Grenier reaches 200 career point mark in Panthers' 18-14 win over Saints

GAFFNEY, S.C. – Seniors Caroline Dunleavy and Sara Grenier combined for 11 points and guided No. 6 Florida Tech (2-0) to an 18-14 victory over No. 13 Limestone (2-1) on the road Friday at Saints Field.

The win extends the Panthers' non-conference winning streak to 12 games, dating back to a 17-5 victory over Belmont Abbey last season.

Grenier led all players with five goals in the game and propelled herself past the 200 career point mark, to 201. The Panthers' all-time leader in points and goals now has 172 goals and 29 assists over her career.

Dunleavy paced the Crimson and Gray with six points on three goals and three assists. Leah Dunn recorded a hat trick, while Mary Gormley and Lauren Tybor produced two goals and an assist, apiece. Tybor also collected a game-high nine draw controls.

Sam Schiano recorded two goals, four ground balls and a team-high four caused turnovers. Stephanie Stuart (2-0) finished with 11 saves while facing 29 total shots on goal.

Limestone finished with an advantage in both ground balls, 26-24, and draw controls, 18-16, and FIT ended with one more turnover, 27-26.

Shaking off the rust on a 14-day layoff, Florida Tech started off the game on the wrong foot and the Saints jumped out to an early 3-0 lead just 3:24 into the contest.

Schiano's goal off an assist from Gormley put the Panthers on the board with 25:01 left in the first half. Dunleavy fed Grenier for her first goal 37 seconds later and from there Florida Tech was off and running.

The Panthers grabbed a 6-3 lead on Dunn's first goal of the season with 12:25 remaining in the period. The Saints trimmed the margin to one following goals by Britannie Ouiment and Shannon Sisk over a 24 second span.

However, FIT closed the half on a 5-0 run, including a pair of goals by Gormley and Grenier, and went into the halftime break leading, 12-5.

Limestone came out of the intermission with a 5-1 spurt and cut its deficit to three, 13-10, with 21:54 to go. Consecutive goals by Grenier, Dunleavy and Dunn pushed the Panthers' lead to six, 16-10.

The Saints would outscore FIT 4-2 over the final 9:30 but it was too little too late for the home team as the Panthers went on to win by a four goal margin.

Florida Tech will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 25, for a top 10 road test at No. 7 Queens in Charlotte, North Carolina. Opening draw for the matchup is set for 1 p.m. at Queens Sports Complex.
