MELBOURNE, Fla. - Increasing its win streak to six, Florida Tech (13-11, 2-5 SSC) downed the Embry-Riddle Eagles (16-5, 8-2SSC) with a 2-0 decision on Friday afternoon at the Nancy Bottge Field.
Earning her first shutout of the season, junior
Melanie Murphy (4-5) tallied another victory under her belt, holding the Eagles scoreless for seven complete innings. On the mound, the Melbourne product allotted ERAU with five hits and stuck out four against 27 batters faced. With her cumulative 1.48 ERA in 66.1 innings pitched, Murphy moves up to the sixth spot inside the SSC leaderboard, and places in eight for total strikeouts with 35.
In the box, veteran
Jessica Callahan led the Panthers lineup up with one double and one RBI in three plate appearances. After today's outing, Callahan bumps up her cumulative batting average to .321 and increases her RBI total to eight. Additionally, the Kissimmee native represents the Panthers in the conference for on-base percentage, where she holds the sixth spot with a .486 average.
Pitching in with FIT's only other run, sophomore
Ally Carver collected her ninth seasonal RBI and now leads the team for runs batted in with nine, while fellow teammates
Makayla Palmer and
Xiarysse Emerenciana each went 1-for-2 on the day with a .500 batting average.
Dominating the entire first five innings of play, both Murphy and ERUA's pitcher Ilona Andringa managed to hold the offenses scoreless, as Andringa allowed solely two hits to Murphy's four.
As the sixth came around, the Crimson and Gray offense came together in the home offensive half to take a narrow, 1-0 lead over ERAU. The sequence began after Emerenciana was awarded a free base, followed by a singled through the left side by
Mikayla Wessel. After both runners advanced on a passed ball, Carver stepped to the plate and drove a sac-fly to the deep centerfield to allow Emerenciana to cross home plate for the 1-0 lead.
With two outs and Wessel on second, Callahan flared a double down the left field line to bring home Wessel, and increase the Panthers stretch, 2-0.
In the final inning, Murphy forced three quick putouts to seal the deal for FIT, 2-0.
Tomorrow, Florida Tech will conclude the conference series against Embry-Riddle with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. ET.
