ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - On Friday night, Florida Tech (29-19, 13-12 SSC) dropped a narrow 1-0 decision to the Eckerd Tritons (19-23, 10-15 SSC), snapping its six-game win-streak at the Turley Athletic Complex.
In the circle,
Melanie Murphy (15-8) recorded her first loss after dominating the circle for three straight weeks, where she collected six consecutive wins. In the evening outing, the junior out of Melbourne held the St. Petersburg lineup to five hits in 6.1 innings pitched and racked up five strikeouts to increase her seasonal total to 93, making it the eighth best among the SSC leaderboard. Despite the loss, the lefty pitcher still dominates the rankings with a conference-best 0.98 ERA in 171 innings pitched.
Carrying the Panthers offense, sophomore
Rachel Kraak went 1-for-2 in the box with one double. Fellow teammates
Jessica Callahan,
Makayla Palmer and
Vanessa Rubio recorded one hit each.
After 1-2-3 frames in the first three innings, Florida Tech built up a momentum in the top of the fourth. It all started with Callahan's single down the left field line, which was followed by another single to second base by Palmer. With no outs on the board, Rubio stepped to the plate and flared a single to through the left side to load the bases for FIT. However, a solid Tritons defense ceased the Panthers offense to retire the side, leaving the Melbourne lineup scoreless.
As fifth and sixth went by blank for both dugouts, Eckerd managed to place a runner at third in the seventh. Unfortunately, the runner then crossed home plate on a double to give the Tritons the 1-0 walk-off win.
Tomorrow, the Panthers will conclude the series against Eckerd with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. ET.
