LAKELAND, Fla. - Recently minted Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year
Lauren Tybor tied a careers-high with six goals to lead No. 5 Florida Tech (16-1) past No. 16 Tampa (12-6), 20-8, in the SSC Tournament semifinals on Friday afternoon at the Barnett Athletic Complex.
The Panthers, the second seed in the tournament, will now square off with top-seeded and No. 4 ranked Florida Southern on Sunday in the league final at 12 p.m. at the Barnett Athletic Complex. The Moccasins dismantled third seeded Rollins, 23-6, in the second semifinal.
This is the second year in a row that FIT and FSC will meet in the SSC Championship Game.
In addition to her six goals, Tybor also led all players with nine draw controls.
Caroline Dunleavy finished with three goals and two assists and
Sara Grenier scored four goals.
Mollie Kaplan recorded four points on two goals and two assists while
Sam Schiano tallied a hat trick. The duo also combined for nine draw controls, eight ground balls and three caused turnovers in the game.
Mary Gormley dished out three assists and forced a game-high four caused turnovers and
Leah Dunn ended with two assists.
Brittney Embree and
Alexis Townsend each scored a goal in the game.
Olivia Going guided the defense with three ground balls.
It didn't take long for the Panthers to get on the board as Dunleavy found Schiano on a cut to the crease for the first goal of the game less than one minute into the first half.
The Crimson & Gray tacked on three more unanswered goals, including two by Tybor, and took a 4-0 lead with 13:48 left in the opening frame.
Tampa responded with a 3-1 run over a 2:56 span to cut the margin to 5-3 with 9:05 to go before halftime.
The Panthers took over the game from there, outscoring UT, 8-2, the remainder of the first half, and went into halftime with a 13-5 lead.
FIT continued to impose its dominance in the second half. The Panthers outscored Tampa, 7-3, in the frame and cruised to their school-record 16th win of the season.
Sunday's game against Florida Southern (18-1) is the fifth meeting between the teams during the last two seasons, and the third in postseason play. The Mocs defeated the Panthers, 15-11, earlier this season in Melbourne.
