SAINT LEO, Fla. – Florida Tech women's basketball looked to make a statement in the Sunshine State Conference as the team went across the state to take on Saint Leo. Unfortunately, a Lions' fourth-quarter surge was too much to overcome as the Panthers fell, 67-82.
The Panthers were led by
Amanda Allen and
Fanny Hakanson. Allen recorded a team-high 15 points on 6-8 shooting. Hakanson was a menace on the boards with a team-high seven rebounds and lead the game in assists with seven.
Florida Tech got off to a solid start as
Aniquah Swan and
Gudlaug Juliusdottir pushed the team out to an early 8-5 lead less than four minutes into the contest. It would increase to 13-9 about two and a half minutes later. But a 9-4 Lions run down the stretch made it 15-18 as the teams went back to their benches.
The second quarter started out with back-to-back threes by Saint Leos which brought Tech's deficit to nine. But over the next few minutes, the women went on a 6-0 run to bring it back within a possession. The Panthers managed to bring it even with eight seconds left on the clock as
Severine Uggen drained a three ball.
It looked like the game would be tied as the teams went into the locker room but a Lions' buzzer beater made it 30-32.
The teams went back-and-forth throughout the third quarter as the lead was never more than a one-possession game for either team. The period ended with the Crimson and Gray being down by three.
However, it quickly jumped to a 14-point deficit as the Lions started the quarter on fire. Florida Tech did all it could and made it a 67-72 ballgame with 1:18 left in regulation. But the game ended with 10 straight made free throws for Saint Leos and this put the final score at 67-82.
Florida Tech will look to rebound Wesleyan Tuesday, Nov. 26, in their final tune-up game of the year. Then they will take on Oakland City in their next official game of the season Saturday, Nov. 30. Both of these contests will take place in the Clemente Center on the campus of Florida Tech.
