VIERA, Fla. – Florida Tech softball (11-2) extends its win streak to 10 straight games as the team takes down Columbus State (5-6) in a wild 2-1 affair.
Panthers' ace,
Melanie Murphy (4-2), tossed her second complete game of the year as she put together a masterful performance going seven innings and surrendered only one run on three hits. She also struck out five of the 26 batters faced.
The Crimson and Gray got on the board, in the bottom of the first, as a
Tina Velazquez Rolon single scored
Xiarysse Emerenciana to make it 1-0.
The Panthers struck again in the third as Velazquez Rolon singled in her second plate appearance which pushed
Cheyenne Nelson across the bag.
Murphy was pitching a no-hitter till the top of the fifth when a slow grounder to third base ended her chance. She then gave up her only run of the night, in the sixth inning, when CSU's Kirstin Reynolds hit a triple to deep right field that sent her teammate safely across the plate. This put the score at 2-1 as the game headed into the final inning.
The final inning saw a wild finish that had the final call of the game reversed by the plate umpire that axed the game-tying run for the Cougars and gave Florida Tech the 2-1 win.
Tech will be back in action Saturday, Feb. 23, as the team will do battle with No. 3 North Georgia at 2:30 p.m. ET and will follow that with a game against Converse at 5 p.m. Both games will be held at USSSA Space Coast Complex's Pride Stadium.
