TAMPA, Fla. – Florida Tech softball looked to grabbed the series victory in the doubleheader against Tampa. Unfortunately the team did not complete their mission as they lost both games, 9-1 and 4-3 (13 innings).
Game one had
Tina Velazquez Rolon (7-1) and
Jordan Lawlis share the pitching duties. The two struggled at times as they combined to give up nine runs, five earned, on five hits and two strikeouts.
The Panthers got on the board in the top of the third as
Cheyenne Nelson scored off a bases loaded walk. However, that was the only Panther run of the contest. But the Spartans ran off nine straight, three in the bottom third and six in the fourth. This ended the five inning game, 9-1.
Game two saw
Melanie Murphy (8-5) put together a Herculean effort as she went the entire 12.2 innings for the Crimson and Gray. The senior tossed 160 total pitches and faced 58 batters and only allowed four runs, three earned, on 13 hits with five strikeouts.
The Panthers were the first one on the board again in game two as a
Jaden Kline doubled, in the top of the second, which sent
Vanessa Rubio safely across the plate. Tampa grabbed the next two runs, one in both the bottom third and fourth, to make it a 2-1 game after four innings.
However, the Spartan lead did not last long as Makayla Wessel bunted in Shaynsse Emerenciana in the top of the fifth. This would be the final run of regulation and the last till the top of the 13
th inning.
Florida Tech was the first to score in extras as an
Alexus Smith single to left field that pushed Velazquez Rolon home. But unfortunately for Florida Tech, Tampa grabbed two in the bottom half of the 13
th as they won, 4-3, in walk-off fashion.
Tech will look to quickly put these two losses behind them as they turn their focus to Monday, March 11, and their showdown with Southwest Minnesota State. This game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. ET at Nancy Bottge Field.
