Game Recap: Softball |

Florida Tech Topples Eckerd in Two 1-0 Games

MELBOURNE, Fla. – No. 5 Florida Tech softball (38-10, 22-7 SSC) opened its senior series with a doubleheader against the Eckerd Tritons (18-29, 10-19 SSC). The Panthers were pushed to the brink but the team managed to grit out two 1-0 wins.

Cheyenne Nelson had a perfect performance at the plate in game one as she went 3-3 and walked in another plate appearance. Mikayla Wessel (3-6) extended her hitting streak to an impressive 12 games and also scored the only two runs of the afternoon.

Senior ace, Melanie Murphy (20-5), began game one in which she went all seven innings and tossed her fifth shutout of the season. During her masterful performance, she allowed only three runs, two in the top of the seventh, and struck out six Triton's batters.

The first game was a defensive showcase as neither team managed to score a run till the bottom of the sixth when a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Jaden Kline was deep enough to score Wessel. This run would be enough as the Crimson and Gray blanked Eckerd, 1-0, to take game one.

Game two saw Jordan Lawlis take to the pitcher's circle. She pitched a beautiful game for her 6.1 innings during which she allowed no runs on four hits and had one strikeout. Murphy (21-5) came into finish the game and she did just that as she shut down Eckerd's scoring chance.

The second game started out similar to the first as both pitchers held it scoreless until an errant allowed Wessel to score the walk-off run in the bottom of the seventh.

Florida Tech will close out its historic regular season with its third-straight sweep Friday, April 26, as the team closes out the series, against the Tritons, with its senior day game. This game is set to begin at 11 a.m. ET at Nancy Bottge Field on the campus of Florida Tech.
