Panthers Snap the Tars Win Streak on the Road

Florida Tech wins game one, 8-1, and holds a 2-0 lead in game two before it was suspended

WINTER PARK, Fla. – No. 11 softball was tasked with a difficult chore as the women looked to snap No. 24 Rollins' 12-game win streak. The Panthers were successful in their quest as they won game one, 8-1 and held a 2-0 lead, in the top of the ninth, before the game was suspended due to weather.

Game one tasked Melanie Murphy (16-5) with the start as the senior tossed another complete game win. During her seven innings in the circle, she allowed only one run on five hits and sat eight down on strikes.

The Crimson and Gray started off the game slow as they fell behind early as a Rollins single in the bottom of the first made it 1-0.

The score stayed this way till the top of the fifth when a Mikayla Wessel single turned into extra bases off a throwing error by the Tars shortstop that allowed Shanysse Emerenciana and Katrina Hand to cross home plate. Later in the inning, a Jaden Kline double down the right-field line aided Melinda Rule, Wessel and Xiarysse Emerenciana over the bag. This gave the Panthers a comfortable 5-1 lead as the game went into the sixth.

Florida Tech tacked on three insurance runs in the top of the seventh as Kline recorded her fourth RBI of the game when she singled to right field and scored Wessel. Vanessa Rubio knocked the second run of the inning across as she got Xiarysse home. Tina Velazquez Rolon tallied the final RBI of game one as she got Kline home.

Game two was a huge pitcher's duel as Velazquez Rolon and her opponent kept it scoreless through eight innings. Luckily for the Panthers, the team's bats came alive in the top of the ninth as a Rule double scored Velazquez Rolon and Shanysse to make it 2-0 before inclement weather suspended the rest of the game.

Game two will pick up Sunday, April 7, at 1 p.m. ET and will be followed by the third and final game of the weekend series.
