MELBOURNE, Fla. – No. 4 Florida Tech softball pushed their impressive win streak to 11 straight as they took down No. 16 Alabama Huntsville, 6-4.
Jaden Kline had a monster day as she went 3-for-3 with one RBI.
Cheyenne Nelson and
Melinda Rule also had one RBI while
Victoria Szrom batted in two runners.
Melanie Murphy (24-5) was tasked with the start for the Crimson and Gray and went six innings before
Jordan Lawlis (S, 2) came into close out the final inning. Murphy surrendered four runs, one earned, on seven hits; while, Lawlis was perfect in her one inning of work as she did not allow a run or hit and collected one K.
UAH jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as they had two runs score in the top of the second inning. It took the Panthers an inning and a half to respond but they did in a big way as they scored three runs to take the lead for good.
Nelson got the party started as she reached first on a fielder's choice that was too slow to get
Melinda Rule before she crossed the bag. Nelson helped orchestrate the next run too as began her steal of second in hopes of getting the catcher to attempt to throw her out which she did and this allowed
Mikayla Wessel to steal home plate.
Kline brought in the final run of the third inning when she singled up the middle to score Nelson. This put the score to 3-2 as the game went into the fourth. Szrom tacked on run in the fourth when she hit a sacrifice fly that got
Shanysse Emerenciana home.
The Crimson and Gray's final two runs came in the sixth inning as Szrom and Rule brought home Shanysse and
Tina Velazquez Rolon respectively. This gave the team a 6-2 advantage as the game went into the final inning.
However, a seventh-inning rally by the Chargers made it interesting as they managed to bring two more runs across the plate and was threatening with more runners on base. These runs made the final score of the game 6-4 as Florida Tech survived to advance to the South Region 2 tournament championship.
Florida Tech will look to grab a second win, of the week, over Mississippi College to punch their ticket to the South Super Regional. This game versus the Choctaws is set to start Saturday, May 11, at 1 p.m. ET at Nancy Bottge Field.
