ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Florida Tech looked to embrace its moniker of road warriors as they went to Eckerd College for the second installment of the yearly doubleheader. The Panthers could not complete the seasonal sweep and suffer their first road loss since Jan. 22 as at the final buzzer the scoreboard read, 59-76.
Severine Uggen proved she belonged in the starting line up as the freshman tallied the team-high in points for a second straight game with 15.
Fanny Hakanson completed a similar feat with rebounds and assists as she recorded seven and five respectively.
The first quarter was a tightly contested battle as neither team held the momentum for very long. It did start out with a 7-2 Panthers lead as Uggen tallied all seven points. However, two quick Tritons buckets evened it back up at 7-7 and this went on for the rest of the quarter. The Panthers thought they would go back to the bench with a six-point advantage after Uggen sunk her second trey, that gave her 10 points in the quarter, but Eckerd matched it right away and it was an 18-15 game at the break.
The second quarter did not start well for the Crimson & Gray as the Tritons opened the second with a 16-2 run and made it a 20-31 game. The rest of the period was closer as Eckerd outscored the Panthers but only by three. This put the score at the half at 27-41.
The third quarter was much like the first quarter as neither team commanded the momentum for more than a couple of minutes.
Gudlaug Juliusdottir was a big portion of the action as she tallied six of the team's 13 points but after 30 minutes, the board read 40-57.
The final quarter of play began with seven unanswered Tritons points that made the lead tough to overcome, as it was a 40-64 contest. Tech did not give up though as the women went on a 10-2 run and brought it back to a 16-point contest. Later on in the period they cut, the deficit to 14 but in the end, 59-76 was the final score of the contest.
Florida Tech will be back in Melbourne, Florida, Saturday, Feb. 15, as the team hosts the Eagles of Embry-Riddle. This contest will serve as the team's annual Play4Kay event and will tipoff at 2 p.m. ET.
