Panthers Outlast the Fighting Knights, 7-5

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Florida Tech softball keeps its momentum rolling with a 7-5 victory over Lynn. This marks the team's eighth win in their last 10 games.

Cheyenne Nelson had a career night as the sophomore went 3-4  with three runs, one RBI and her first-ever homerun in a Panthers uniform. Tina Velazquez Rolon and Victoria Szrom also registered multiple hits with two apiece. Mikayla Wessel (2), Velazquez Rolon (1) and Rachel Kraak (1) tallied the other four runs for the women. Szrom led the team with three RBI while Vanessa Rubio had the final two.

Jordan Lawlis was the first Tech pitcher and in her three innings of work, she allowed three runs on three hits and sat three down on strikes. Velazquez Rolon came in for the final four innings and guided the team to the win as she surrendered two runs, one earned, on five hits and struck out three batters.

The Crimson & Gray opened the scoring with a bang as Nelson blasted one over the center field to make it 1-0 in the top of the first. A few batters later, Szrom hit a shot to deep-right field and it gave Velazquez Rolon time to tout across the plate.

The Panthers doubled its lead in the second inning as this time Szrom powered a ball through the middle that scored Nelson and Wessel.

A three-run Lynn homer in the top of the third made it a 4-3 game and then the Fighting Knights grab the lead briefly in the fourth as a double brought two home. However, in the bottom portion of the inning, Florida Tech evened it up at 5-5 as Nelson made it home safely on a Rubio double down the right-field line.

This tie held until the bottom of the sixth, as a Lynn error got Wessel and Kraak home. The Fighting Knights mistake gave Tech all it needed to close out the contest as the Panthers won, 7-5.

Florida Tech will go for its second Sunshine State Conference sweep Saturday, Feb. 29, in a doubleheader against Lynn. The first pitch takes place at noon ET on Nancy Bottge Field.
