MELBOURNE, Fla. – After an impressive week in which the team went 5-1, the Panthers wanted to keep the momentum rolling as they welcomed Southern New Hampshire to Melbourne for a midweek doubleheader. The Panthers kept it rolling and made it 16 wins in the last 20 games as they swept the Penmen, 3-1 and 9-1.
Mikayla Wessel,
Tina Velazquez Rolon and
Vanessa Rubio all tallied a team-high three hits between the two contests while
Cheyenne Nelson and
Jaden Kline had two apiece. Nelson was the Crimson & Gray's run leader with three and Rubio was the only other member with multiple runs as she had two. In terms of RBI, Kline and Rubio had the high mark with three each and Nelson was the sole member with two.
Jordan Lawlis and Velazquez Rolon both pitched complete-game masterpieces. Lawlis opened the doubleheader and allowed one run, none earned, on four hits and had four strikeouts in seven innings.
Velazquez Rolon was even better as she tossed her first complete-game no-hitter in a Panthers uniform. The Puerto Rico native went five full innings and gave up one run and no hits with three strikeouts.
The game began as a pitcher's duel as both teams could not get it going at the plate. This duel kept it scoreless until the top of the fourth when the Penmen broke through and put the Panthers down, 0-1.
However, this deficit did not last long as the Crimson & Gray scored three in the bottom of the fifth. Nelson started the fun as she hit one deep enough to center that got
Ally Carver across the plate. Kline made it 3-1 when she sent one straight up the middle and scored
Katrina Hand and Wessel. This ended the scoring in game one as the Panthers won, 3-1.
Game two was all Florida Tech as the women started strong and picked it back up, in the fourth and fifth, to close it out in only five innings. The first of the three first-inning runs came off an SNHU wild pitch that gave Nelson plenty of time to cross home plate. Two grounders later in the frame scored Wessel and Velazquez.
Southern New Hampshire closed the gap by one run in the top of the third but this would be their only run of the contest. The Crimson & Gray got back on the board in the fourth as a Nelson single got
Ashley Campbell home from second base and a couple of batters later, Nelson scored as Velazquez Rolon hit one off the fence in right-center field. Rubio made it 6-1 when she hit the team's second straight double and got Velazquez Rolon home.
Florida Tech managed to run rule the Penmen thanks to another three-run effort in the bottom of the fifth. Carver got the first run across as she grounded out to the shortstop but it allowed
Irene Llorens Ballester to cross the bag. A Penmen's throwing error on a double steal attempt brought
Rachel Kraak home for the second run.
The third and final run of the inning came via a bases-loaded walk that allowed Nelson to trot across home plate. This put the run differential at eight and ended the contest in five innings as the Panthers won, 9-1.
Florida Tech will now turn its sights to No. 8, Saint Leo, as the team gets back into conference play Friday, March 13. This will be Tech's first game away from Melbourne since Feb. 22 and is set to begin at 7 p.m. ET in Saint Leo, Florida.
