Panthers Upset Flames in Penalty Kicks to Advance to the Sweet 16

Florida Tech hands South Region No. 1 seed Lee its first loss of season, 3-2 in penalty kicks

STATS OF THE MATCH: 
  • Flames got on the board first on a goal by Jordan Blair inside the 8-yard box off a cross from Lauren Weimer just 5:50 into the first half. 
  • Tech tied the game up at 1-1 on a left-footed shot from Mayara Queiroz Reis off an assist from Marem Ndiongue. Queiroz Reis teamed up with Ndiongue on a give-and-go and Queiroz Reis was able to fire it into the top left of the goal for the equalizer at the 17:37 mark of the first half.  
  • At halftime, Lee had a 6-3 advantage in shots and a 1-0 edge on corner kicks. Maria Sanchez Recuero made 2 saves in the first half. The teams combined for 20 fouls in the first 45 minutes with 12 being called against Lee. 
  • Flames picked up the pressure offensively in the second half, firing off 11 shots including 5 on goal but each time Sanchez Recuero was there to make the stop. 
  • Flames continued their onslaught in the first and second overtime periods, outshooting the Panthers 6-0.
  • Tech went down a player in the first overtime as Alyssa Bartle received her second yellow card and had to depart the game. This left the Panthers with just 10 players the rest of the contest. However, the Panther defense continued to stay firm, and eventually time ran out and the game went to penalty kicks.
  • Lee finished with a 23-8 advantage in shots and 9-1 edge in corners through 110 minutes of play. Sanchez Recuero recorded a season-high 9 saves to keep the Panthers' season alive. 
  • Queiroz Reis scored on the Panthers' first penalty kick and Sanchez Recuero stooped Lee's shot to put Tech up 1-0 after the first round. 
  • Vilma Ferdfelt then made her PK and Sanchez Recuero stopped the Flames second attempt to give Tech a 2-0 advantage 
  • JoJo Michaels had her shot blocked and Lee Schroeder scored for Lee to make it 2-1 after three rounds of PKs
  • Veronica Thordardottir netted her PK followed by a make from Lee's Sage Sammeli to put the Panthers up 3-2 after four rounds.
  • Ndiongue's PK was stopped by Jacqueline Burns giving Lee a chance to extend the game on Mallory Hayden's PK. However, Hayden's shot missed off the right post. This game Florida Tech the win and the Panthers rushed the field in celebration.
     
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Florida Tech advances to the Sweet 16 for just the second time in program history. The Panthers first made it to the third round of the tournament in 2010. 
  • Panthers halted Lee's perfect season (19-0-1) with the result and avenged their 2-0 loss to the Flames from the 2017 NCAA Tournament that put an end to Florida Tech's season.
  • Tech has now won six NCAA Tournament games in penalty kicks in program history. 

UP NEXT: Florida Tech advances to the Sweet 16 where it will face No. 3 seed West Florida in the NCAA South Region Championship on Friday, Dec. 3 at the UWF Soccer Complex. Time for the contest has yet to be determined.
