SAINT LEO, Fla. – Florida Tech softball took to the road for another Sunshine State Conference contest as they went across the state for a battle with Saint Leo. The women came out on top extending their win streak to six with 2-1 and 4-0 victories over the Lions.
Mikayla Wessel and
Cheyenne Nelson lead the way with three hits apiece with two of Nelson's hits being doubles.
Victoria Szrom also had a great day at the plate as she tallied her first home run of the season.
The trio of
Jordan Lawlis,
Samantha Guider and
Tina Velazquez Rolon all made an appearance on the rubber over the two games. Lawlis got the start for game one and during her four innings of work, she allowed one run on four hits and had one strikeout. Guider (5-3) came in relief of Lawlis and she delivered in her four innings in the circle surrendering no runs and only four hits.
Velazquez Rolon (2-0) tallied a complete game shutout with only one hit allowed while striking out eight Lion's batters.
Both of the teams eased into game one as the first run did not come until the bottom of the second off a Lions sacrifice fly. It seemed that would not be the only Lions run of the inning but Tech managed to work their way out of a jam and limited the damage as they went back to the plate down 1-0.
A Szrom solo homer in the top of the fourth brought the score even at 1-1 and this held until the game reached extra innings as a
Chloe French sacrifice fly scored Nelson and gave Tech its first lead of the afternoon. The women held onto the advantage as they grabbed three outs in the bottom of the eight without conceding a run giving them the 2-1 victory.
The Crimson & Gray got off to a quick start as the team had three runs in the first plate appearance of game two. French got the first run on the board as she hit into a fielder's choice that got Nelson across the plate. During the next at-bat, a Lions wild pitch allowed Wessel enough time to trot home and a Velazquez Rolon sacrifice fly later in the inning scored French making it 3-0.
The 3-0 lead held until the top of the sixth inning as both teams put on defensive showcases.
Allison Platon broke the scoring drought as a base-loaded walk gave the Panthers its fourth run of the game. However, this walk was the final run of the game as the team coasted the rest of the way to the 4-0 win.
Florida Tech finishes its four-game series against the Lions Saturday, April 17. Game one of the doubleheaders begins at 3 p.m. ET and takes place at Nancy Bottge Field.
