Panthers Split Final Road Doubleheader of 2021

Florida Tech goes 1-1 in final road games of the season

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Florida Tech softball took its final road trip of the 2021 season as they headed to West Palm Beach, Florida for the first doubleheader of the team's Palm Beach Atlantic series. The Panthers picked up a split in a pair of 1-0 extra-inning contest.

Cheyenne Nelson again showed why she is the best hitter in the Sunshine State Conference as the center fielder went 5-8 with one RBI and two steals. Kelly McLaughlin was the sole member of the team that tallied a run.

Tina Velazquez Rolon (4-2) started game one and put together an amazing outing as she grabbed a complete game shutout in an extra-innings affair.  Over her 10 innings in the circle, the Puerto Rico native allowed two hits and recorded seven strikeouts over her 137 pitches. Jordan Lawlis (4-7) was called upon for the second contest and put in an impressive performance in her own right as she surrendered one run, none earned, on three hits with six sent back to the dugout on strikes in 7.1 innings.

Game one was a textbook pitcher's duel as neither team found much-sustained success at the plate and this showed on the scoreline. The game was 0-0 through the seven innings of regulation and continued that way until the top of the 10th inning. Nelson broke the scoreless tie when she hit a ball into left field for a sacrifice fly that got McLaughlin across the plate. The Panthers then shut down the Sailfish in the bottom half of the 10th and got the 1-0 victory.

Game two picked up where the first left off as the fielders were in control for all of regulation. The 8th inning saw a controversial out at home plate for Tech, which resulted in a protest by head coach Val Silvestrini. In the bottom of the frame, a Sailfish runner found their way home for the walk-off run that made it a 1-0 defeat for Florida Tech.

The Crimson & Gray finishes its series with the Sailfish Sunday, May 2 at home. This doubleheader serves as the team's senior day and begins at 3 p.m. ET.
