Panthers Fall to Mocs in Season Finale

Alexis Townsend reaches 100-goal mark as Tech falls to No. 7 Florida Southern 19-6

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Alexis Townsend scored four goals, including the 100th of her career, but it was not enough as Florida Tech was dealt a 19-6 loss by No. 7 Florida Southern in the Panthers' season finale on Wednesday at Panther Stadium.

Tech fell behind early in the first half after the Mocs opened the game with seven unanswered goals. Townsend and Mollie Kaplan each scored in the first half, with the latter goal making the deficit 12-2 with 3:44 to go. One minute later the game went into lightning delay, sending the teams to the locker rooms to wait out the storm.

The action resumed roughly one hour later and Florida Southern continued its control over the game, eventually winning by a 13-goal margin.

Townsend paced the Panthers with four goals on five shots and one ground ball. Kaplan recorded two goals, five draw controls and a ground ball. Rachel Johnson, Caroline MacLeod, Fallon Mears and Kailee O'Brien each dished out an assist in the game.

O'Brien also collected five ground balls and five caused turnovers in the contest. Maggie Reed ended with two ground balls and two caused turnovers while Olivia Going collected two ground balls and one caused turnover. Emily Harris made eight saves in goal for the Panthers.

The Mocs took control early on and jumped out to a 7-0 advantage with 15:49 to go in the first half.

Tech got its first goal of the game after O'Brien forced a turnover and then raced down the field and found Townsend right off the crease for a score with 15:19 left. FSC responded with a goal 18 seconds later and proceeded to rattle off four more goals to push its lead to 12-1 with 9:53 remaining before halftime.

Kaplan netted her first of the game with 3:44 to go to bring the margin to 12-2. The game then went into a one hour lightning delay with 2:46 left in the first half. When play resumed, the Mocs quickly increased their lead to 13-2 at the 2:12 mark and carried an 11-point margin into halftime.

FSC pushed its lead to 14-2 just 36 seconds into the second half. However, Townsend then went on her own three-goal run, first scoring a goal off an assist from MacLeod with 26:51 left. Then, with 23 minutes to go, the recent graduate made history as she collected a feed from Mears on a man-up free position attempt, knifed her way through the Mocs defense and scored the 100th goal of her career. She becomes the sixth player in program history to reach the 100-goal mark. Three minutes later, Townsend netted her fourth goal of the game off an assist from Johnson to make the score 14-5.

Florida Southern tallied five more goals to move its lead to 19-5 with less than four minutes to go. Kaplan then closed out the scoring, and her career, with an unassisted goal with 1:56 remaining to bring the game to its final 13-goal margin.

FSC finished with an advantage in shots (34-13), draw controls (18-9) and caused turnovers (9-8). The Mocs were successful on 9-10 clears while Tech went 7-14 on its clear attempts.

Now with the season at a close, the women's lacrosse program will look forward to the 2022 season. Florida Tech returns a majority of its roster from this season, losing just three graduating, yet very accomplished, players in Olivia Going, Mollie Kaplan and Alexis Townsend.
