Hannah Roney Leads Panthers to Triple Overtime in Heartbreak Road Loss

After Tech completed the comeback, Hannah Roney's buzzer beater three pushed the Panthers to overtime!

FIRST HALF: 
  • Back-to-back three-pointers would put the Panthers up 6-0 two minutes into the contest. Aiste Vaitekunaite knocked down a three off a Barry turnover to get the Panthers started. Less than a minute later Fanny Paulin grabbed a defensive board which led to a faskbreak three.
  • Barry answered back going on an 13-4 run to close out the first and take the lead, 13-10.
  • An 8-0 run gave the Bucs' a 21-12 lead but a three by Cheyenne Scott and a Barry turnover leading to a jumper from Vaitekunaite trimmed the margin, 21-17, with 4:05 remaining in the half.
  • Panthers recorded five unanswered points – layups by Vaitekunaite and Hannah Roney and a free throw by Scott - to close out the half, trailing 24-22.
SECOND HALF: 
  • Roney knocked down a three for the Panthers first basket of the half to cut the margin to one, 26-25 with 7:20 to go in the third.
  • Barry took off on a 10-0 run to take their first double-digit lead, 36-25, 4:31 remaining.
  • Teams exchanged baskets the rest of the quarter. Barry went into the fourth ahead 49-38.
  • It was back-and-forth for the majority of the fourth until the Panthers made a 6-0 run in the final 34 seconds. Roney stole the ball away from Barry in back-to-back plays leading to fastbreak layups, 24 seconds remaining. A Tech defensive rebound led to a Vaitekunaite contested layup, 64-62 with 11 seconds remaining.
  • Barry recorded two free throws, but Roney answered with a three coming out of a timeout to make it a one-point game, 66-65.
  • Another made free throw by the Bucs' with 4 seconds on the clock put Tech down by 2. In the final two seconds Roney's shot was blocked but she got the put back as the buzzer sounded to force overtime.
OVERTIME 1: 
  • Barry opened with two threes to take the lead. Teams went back-and-forth on fouls and free throws for the next 3:23.
  • Down by 3, 77-74, Roney makes a driving layup, draws the foul, and converts the three-point play to force a second overtime.
OVERTIME 2: 
  • Bucs' opened the second OT going on a 5-0 run, 82-77 with 3:28 to go.
  • Two free throws by Scott and a Vaitekunaite layup assisted by Roney put the Panthers down by one, 82-81.
  • Each team recorded a layup with Barry also making two baskets from the charity stripe. Bucs' lead by 3, 86-83, with 4 seconds on the clock.
  • Roney banks a three off the glass to tie it up once again, 86-86. Panther defense holds off the buzzer beater by the Bucs' to enter a third overtime.
OVERTIME 3: 
  • A made layup by Harriet Swindells off a Panther turnover gave Barry their first points of the OT. Roney gave Tech their first point with a basket from the free throw line.
  • Swindell records a second-chance jumper to edge the Panthers, 90-87.
  • Each team tallies two free throws, Barry leads 92-89 with 17 seconds to go.
  • Tech looks for the buzzer beater once again but falls just short.
 
NOTABLE PANTHERS:
  • Hannah Roney recorded a season-high 30 points on 10-19 shooting, eight rebounds, three assists, and five steals.
  • Vaitekunaite had a career-high game with 18 points, 10 rebounds, and six blocks.
  • Fanny Paulin scored 13 points to go along with three rebounds, two assists, one block, and one steal.
  • Lina Stranger-Johannessen finished with 12 points, four rebounds, three blocks, and two steals on 2-6 shooting and 8-9 on free throws.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • Tech finished the game shooting 34.2% (25-73) from the field, 34.5% (10-29) from three, and 64.4% at the line.
  • Barry made 31.8% (27-85) of their shots in the game, including 20.8% (5-24) beyond the arc, and 71.7% (33-45) on free throws.
  • Bucs' won the rebounding battle (67-46) and edged out the Panthers in points in the paint (26-24) and steals (18-13).
  • Panthers held the advantage in points off turnovers (28-23), bench points (18-15), and blocks (13-9).

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Tonight's match-up was Tech's first overtime game since Nov. 24, 2018 against Simon Fraser.
  • It is the first multi-overtime game since Jan. 28, 2006 when the Panthers defeated Florida Southern in five-OT's.
  • Tech is 2-2 all-time against Barry in OT contests.
  • The teams 13 blocks tie for second most blocks in a game in program history. Tech's last 13-block game was on Nov. 13, 2008 vs Florida Memorial.
  • Vaitekunaite's six blocks tie for 5th most in a game in program history.
 
 
UP NEXT: Florida Tech returns to the Clemente Center Saturday, Jan. 15 to take on Lynn in an SSC match-up at 2 p.m.
