Panthers Lose Heartbreaker to Lions

FIRST QUARTER:
  • Rachel Johnson scored the first two goals of the game for the Panthers' and gave Tech a 2-1 lead with 10:03 left in the first. 
  • Tech's advantage moved to 3-1 when Kailee O'Brien converted a free position goal with 6:47 to go in the quarter. 
  • Caroline MacLeod scored with 52 seconds left in the frame to give the Panthers a 4-2 lead. 
 
SECOND QUARTER:
  • Lions outscored Tech 3-1 in the second quarter and the teams went into halftime tied at 5-5. 
  • Jennifer Boyle accounted for the Panthers' lone goal in the quarter, scoring with 9:37 remaining to put Tech up 5-3. 

THIRD QUARTER: 
  • Saint Leo scored twice to open the third quarter and grabbed its first lead of the game. 
  • Kayla Minton scored her first of three second-half goals with 2:34 to go in the third to trim the margin to 7-6 heading into the fourth quarter. 

FOURTH QUARTER:
  • Panthers tied the game at 7-7 on a goal by Carly Niro with 11:55 left in regulation, but the Lions scored 45 seconds later to regain the lead, 8-7.
  • Minton tallied her second of the day off an assist from O'Brien to tie the game at 8-8 with 8:37 to go. 
  • Lions scored with 5:51 remaining to take back the lead 9-8. 
  • Minton then completed her hat trick and tied the game once again at 9-9 with 2:37 to go. 
  • Panthers collected the ensuing draw control and got a great shot on target, but Boyle's attempt was stopped. The Lions picked up the ball and marched down the field and scored with 3 seconds remaining to send Tech to its second SSC loss.

NOTABLE PANTHERS:
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • Florida Tech finished with an edge in shots (31-21), shots on goal (20-14), and ground balls (23-16).
  • Lions had a slight edge in draw controls (12-10).
  • Panthers were 2-4 on free position attempts while SLU went 2-5.
  • Tech was 9-15 on clears while Saint Leo was successful on 8-13 clears.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • The loss evens the all-time series between Florida Tech and Saint Leo to 4-4. The Panthers have lost the last three meetings with the Lions. 
  • With her 10 ground balls in the game, Kailee O'Brien surpassed 100 ground balls and now sits at 103 for her career. She is the 9th Panther in program history to record 100 ground balls. 
  • O'Brien's 10 ground balls also is the second most ground balls in a single game in SSC women's lacrosse history.

UP NEXT: Florida Tech is back on the road on Wednesday, April 13, as the Panthers travel to Tampa, Florida to take on the Spartans. The game is set to begin at 5 p.m. at the Naimoli Athletic Complex.
