Second Half Comeback Efforts Not Enough to Overcome Early Deficit

LAKELAND, Fla.- The Panthers traveled to Lakeland to take on the Florida Southern Mocs. The Mocs outscored Florida Tech 22-9 in the first quarter, but the Panthers responded in the second, third, and fourth quarter. The late comeback efforts weren't enough to overcome that first quarter deficit.

FIRST QUARTER 
  • Florida Southern got on the board first with a three pointer.
  • Tai Roberts responded with a jumper to keep the score close.
  • The Mocs went on an 8-0 run to extend their lead to nine.
  • Roberts drilled a three to cut the margin to six.
  • Florida Southern scored the last seven points of the first quarter.
SECOND QUARTER 
  • The Mocs scored seven straight points and jumped out to a double-digit lead forcing the Panthers to call a timeout.
  • The Panthers didn't get their first field goal until the 6:27 mark with a layup from Dalma Ehmann.
  • Florida Tech scored six straight points to bring the Panthers within 13.
  • Heading into the half, Tech trailed 36-22.
  • At the half, Roberts led the Panthers with 11 points. 
THIRD QUARTER
  • The Panthers were able to get things going on offense, but the Mocs wouldn't go away quietly.
  • Mocs got things going with a layup, but Sarah Liberatore responded with a jumper on the other end followed by a layup from Roberts.
  • Florida Southern drained a three pointer, but Aiste Vaitekunaite answered with her own three pointer on the other end with 4:57 to go.
  • With four seconds left, Lina Stranger-Johannessen grabbed the rebound racing down the other end of the court for a layup to cut the Mocs lead to 11.
  • In the third quarter, the Panthers outscored the Mocs 19-16. 
FOURTH QUARTER
  • Remingtyn Smith scored her first points of the night weaving through defenders to score on a layup.
  • Vaitekunaite was able to trim the deficit to nine with a layup at the 7:57 mark.
  • The Mocs had an answer for the Panthers when they went on an 9-0 run to extend their lead back to nineteen forcing Tech to call a timeout.
  • Liberatore was able to end the Mocs run with 4:19 to go.
  • Stranger-Johannessen came up with a steal and a three pointer for the Panthers followed by a layup from Roberts, but it wouldn't be enough to complete the comeback.
NOTABLE PANTHERS:
  • Stranger-Johanessen tallied eleven points, eight rebounds, three assists, and four steals.
  • Roberts finished her night with 17points, five rebounds, and three steals.
  • Vaitekunaite contributed 13 points and six rebounds.   
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • Florida Tech is now 40-52 in the all-time series against Florida Southern.  
  • Florida Southern shot 42% (25-60) from the field, including 42% (8-19) from the three, and 78% (14-18) at the line.
  • The Mocs led in rebounds (40-35), second chance points (15-11), and fast break points (11-4).
  • Florida Tech shot 41% (26-63) from the field, 31% (5-16) from behind the three-point line, and 50% (2-4) from the free-throw line.
  • The Panthers led in bench points (20-17), points in the paint (34-30), and assists (14-13).
  • Both teams had had 10 steals.

UP NEXT: Florida Tech will be back at home to face Saint Leo on Wednesday, Jan. 25th. Tip-off is set for 5:30PM.
