Women’s Basketball Drops Close One Against Sailfish

Tai Roberts finished with 22 points, just one point shy of her career high

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Women's basketball hit the road for another competitive conference matchup with the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish. It was a hard-fought battle until the buzzer sounded with the Sailfish surviving 65-70.

FIRST QUARTER 
  • The Sailfish got off to a hot start with a quick 6-0 run.
  • Tai Roberts ended their run with a layup to put Florida Tech on the board.
  • With 3:55 to go Divine Guthrie headed to the free throw line where she made 1-2 free throws. She cut the deficit to four.
  • Teams traded baskets for the rest of the quarter. Aiste Vaitekunaite ended the quarter on a layup.
  • Tech trailed by five at the end of the first 15-10.
SECOND QUARTER 
  • Sarah Liberatore got the Panthers started offensively with a layup.
  • The Sailfish responded with back-to-back baskets on their end by Davis and Aalim.
  • The Panthers went on a 4-0 scoring run capped off by a layup from Dalma Ehmann with 3:02 to go.
  •  A nice pass from Remingtyn Smith to Lina Stranger-Johannessen cut the margin to just five.
  • A three-pointer by Schenk ended the half 30-22.
THIRD QUARTER
  • The Panthers came out of the half with some momentum scoring on a jumper from Roberts followed by a layup from Ehmann forcing PBA to call a timeout.
  • Roberts drove to the basket and a foul for a chance at a three-point play. Roberts converted her free-throw.
  • The Sailfish went on a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 19: 52-33.
  • The Panthers responded with their own 9-0 run to cut the deficit to 10.
  • Demorest drained a three pointer for the Sailfish to end the quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER
  • Down by 13 with 10 minutes left to play, the Panthers needed to find a way to claw their way back into this game.
  • The Sailfish started it off with a jumper to push their lead to 15.
  • Florida Tech didn't back down and the offense executed beginning with a layup from Smith and allowed the Panthers to go on an 11-0 run.
  • Just like that, with 3:39 to go Tech was within four.
  • Roberts hit a three-pointer with 0:55 seconds to go, but the Panthers still trailed by four.
  • Liberatore followed with a three of her own with 0:24 seconds left, and Tech was down 68-65.
  • The Sailfish would score the last three points of the game and survive.
  • The Panthers outscored PBA 21-13 in the fourth quarter.
NOTABLE PANTHERS:
  • Roberts finished just one point short of her career high with 22 points, two rebounds and two assists.
  • Liberatore tallied 14 points and two assists.
  • Stranger-Johanessen added 12 points, four rebounds, and two assists.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • Florida Tech is now 29-7 in the all-time series against Palm Beach Atlantic.
  • PBA shot 40% (24-60) from the field, including 15% (4-26) from the three, and 72% (18-25) at the free throw line.
  • The Panthers shot 38% (22-58) from the field, 33% (5-15) from behind the three-point line, and 76% (16-21) from the free-throw line.
  • PBA led in rebounds (49-30), second chance points (12-0), and bench points (25-18).
  • Both teams had eight steals.
UP NEXT: Florida Tech will return home on Wednesday, Jan. 11 to face Embry-Riddle. Tip-off is set for 5:30PM.
