Women’s Soccer Earns Title in Regular Season Finale

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The No. 22 Florida Tech women's soccer team was crowned co-champions of the Sunshine State Conference (SSC) on Tuesday night after they defeated Florida Southern, 3-1, to improve to 8-1-1 in conference play.

STATS OF THE MATCH
  • The Panthers came out firing on all cylinders to start the match. Josefine Nilsen and Savannah Oxley both put shots on target in the first 12 minutes but were stopped by the Mocs keeper.
  • In the 13th minute, Marem Ndiongue rang a shot off the crossbar. Just four minutes later, she found the back of the net after Eve Tiktikakis sent a cross into the box to put Tech up 1-0.
  • In the 22nd minute, Florida Southern responded with a goal from Malia Brost to tie the game at 1-1.
  • After some back-and-forth for possession, a foul in the box led to a converted penalty for Ndiongue's second score of the game and extended the Panthers lead out to 2-1 in the 31st minute.
  • After halftime, both teams battled for possession. The Mocs threatened in the 58th minute with back-to-back shots on goal, but Ayana Aoyagi came with the save both times to preserve the lead.
  • The scoreless drought continued for several minutes. With the clock winding down, Ndiongue sent a shot toward the goal,      and it found the back of the net in the final seconds to give the match its final score of 3-1.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Florida Tech moves to 14-8-6 all-time against Florida Southern. Their last win against the Mocs was a 3-0 triumph on Oct. 3, 2018.
  • With tonight's win, the Panthers secured the top seed in the conference tournament and were crowned regular season champions for the first time since 2010.
  • Marem Ndiongue's hat trick was her second this season. Her 32 points and 13 goals both lead the SSC. She is also tied for fourth in the conference in assists with six.
  • Florida Tech finished the regular season on a 10-game unbeaten streak with a 9-0-1 record during that span.
 
UP NEXT: Florida Tech's next match will be on Thursday, Nov. 9 at home against the winner between Rollins and Eckerd in the semifinals of the SSC Tournament. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Rick Stottler Field.
