Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Alex Henderson

Eagles Overrun Panthers in Second Half

DAYTONA BEACH, FLA.-  the Florida Tech women's basketball team travelled to the ICI Center in Daytona Beach to take on Embry-Riddle which resulted in Tech falling in the contest 65-59. Emily Acampora led the Eagles with 15 points and a career high seven steals.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

FIRST QUARTER 
  • Eva Zaragoza of Embry-Riddle was the first to score in the game as she hit two threes before Sarah Liberatore hit a three of her own to make it 6-3, two-minutes into the game.
  • After two made free-throws by Tai Roberts the Panthers would still find themselves behind 10-7 with 5:17 remaining in the quarter.
  • A jumper by Roberts would decrease the Panthers deficit to just two at  11-9 right before a media timeout.
  • After three layups by the Eagles and two made free throws the Panthers would respond with a layup by Dalma Ehmann and two free throws again from Roberts as the Eagles lead grew to six, ahead 19-13.
  • As Lina Stranger-Johannsen was sent to the line, making both free throws, ERAU would record a layup before Emily Acampora hit a three as the Panthers still found themselves behind 21-18 with 00:38 to go in the quarter.
  • Four straight free throws by the Eagles Zaragoza would see the Panthers look to capture the lead in the second with the Panthers behind 25-18 at the end of the first quarter.
 
SECOND QUARTER
  • Divine Guthrie and Kyandra Poitier were both sent to the line early in the second quarter, making all three shots to make it 25-21, Embry-Riddle.
  • A jumper by Jenna Teterycz put ERAU Ahead by six, 27-21, before layups from Acampora and Roberts made it a 27-25 game.
  • The Eagle would go on a 10-3 run, extending their lead to 37-28. 
  • Tech's next five points would come from two layups by Ehmann and a made free throw by Acampora as the Panthers would trail 44-33 at the end of the half.
 
THIRD QUARTER 
  • The Eagles would begin the third on a 9-4 run increasing their lead to 51-37 two minutes into the quarter.
  • Another big run by ERAA would see the Eagles extend their lead 58-41 as the Panthers deficit grew to 17 points.
  • Tech managed to scor their next six points all at the line with Sarah Liberatore hitting four with Acampora recording two points from a foul as the Eagles lead shrunk to just 12, but still ahead 59-47 with 2:26 to go.
  • In the final two minutes, Embry-Riddle outscore the Crimson and Gray six to four making it a 65-41 game entering the fourth quarter.
 
 
FOURTH QUARTER
  • Laurie Satchell of ERAU put the first points on the board in the fourth quarter following five straight points from two layups and one made free throw.
  • Poitier scored first for Tech in the fourth after a made layup as the Panthers were behind 7-53.
  • Eight unanswered points by the Eagles would increase their lead to 78-53 with 3:33 remaining.
  • With 3:13 to go Poitier managed to put two more points on the board for Tech before the Eagles made two more baskets at the free throw line.
  • A made Layup by Acampora would make it an 80-57 game.
  • The Eagles tallied the final five points of the game.

NOTABLE PANTHERS:
  • With seven steals, Emily Acampora accumulated the most steals in a single game by a Panthers since DeLise Williams recorded eight steals against Benedict on March 11, 2016.
  • Acampora recorded a total of 15 points to lead the Crimson and Gray with five made free throws, four field goals and two three-pointers.
  • Tech was 20-22 at the line with Sarah Liberatore (6-6), Tai Roberts (4-4), Kyandra Poitier (2-2) and Lina Stranger-Johannessen (2-2) all perfect in their free throws.
  • Roberts led Tech with six rebounds.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • The Panthers are now 7-8 all-time against Embry-Riddle.
  • The Eagles have now won seven of the past 11 meetings.
  • Tech falls to 3-5 all-time at the ICI Center against ERAU.
  • The Panthers last win in Daytona Beach against the Eagles came on January 4th, 2020 in a 77-62 victory.

The Panthers will return home on Monday, December 18th where they will take on Flagler College at 12:00 P.M. in the first day of the Florida Tech Holiday Classic at the Clemente Center in Melbourne, Fla.
