Batchadji’s Late Score Lifts Tech over PBA

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Florida Tech women's soccer team defeated Palm Beach Atlantic, 2-0, in an out-of-conference road matchup thanks to some late-game heroics by freshman Sara Batchadji.

STATS OF THE MATCH:
  • Tech had an opportunity in just the fourth minute of the match after Marem Ndiongue found a hole in PBA's defense, but the Sailfish keeper came up with a diving save.
  • After some back-and-forth for possession, Ndiongue used a cross from the far side of the pitch to rip another shot in the 31st minute, but the keeper came up with another save to keep the match scoreless.
  • Just nine minutes later, Daniela Tobon smashed a shot from inside the box that rang off the left post, but Halla Helgadottir's second chance sailed high, and the teams went into halftime knotted at 0-0.
  • The Panthers outshot the Sailfish, 9-2, in the first half with five shots on target.
  • In the opening minutes of the second half, the Panthers drew a foul from just outside the box. Tobon's took the free kick, but her shot flew just over the crossbar.
  • PBA threatened in the 51st minute, but Ayana Aoyagi stopped the shot with a tremendous diving effort.
  • Both teams jostled back-and-forth for the next several minutes until Tech earned a free kick from just outside the box. Sara Batchadji took advantage and smoked her shot past the keeper to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead in the 81st minute.
  • Just five minutes later, a Sailfish foul in the box led to a penalty kick. Batchadji converted the opportunity for her second score of the day to give the match its final score of 2-0.
  • Tech outshot PBA, 15-8, on the day, including 8-2 with shots on goal.
  • Ayana Aoyagi tallied two clutch saves in goal for the Panthers to keep the match scoreless.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Florida Tech moves to 16-3 all-time against PBA. The Panthers have won all four matchups against the Sailfish under head coach Ryan Moon.
  • This is the first time that Tech has had three consecutive shutout wins since the 2013 season.
  • Sara Batchadji's two goals were the first of her collegiate career.
 
UP NEXT: Florida Tech returns to the confines of Rick Stottler Field for the team's home opener against No. 2 Embry-Riddle. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Melbourne, Fla.
