Llopis Nails Game Winner in OT

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Florida Tech women's soccer team battled it out to overtime with Barry in the quarterfinal round of the Sunshine State Conference (SSC) tournament. Marta Llopis provided the late heroics with a goal in the second overtime to send the Panthers to the semifinals.

STATS OF THE MATCH:
  • The Panthers took control of the ball early in the half, sending its first shot on target in just the 13th minute, but the Bucs' keeper was able to make the save.
  • Over the next 20 minutes, Tech continued to send shots towards the goal but was unable to find the back of the net.
  • The period ended with no goals, but the Panthers' defense kept Barry from taking a shot in the period.
  • Less than 30 seconds into the second half, Marta Llopis broke away from the Bucs' defense and ripped a shot past the keeper to put Tech on top 1-0.
  • Two minutes later, Alia Jaidi drew a foul in the box and converted a penalty for Barry to knot the game at 1-1.
  • From that point on the Panthers dominated possession on the offensive half of the field.
  • Tech barraged the Bucs' keeper with 11 more shots in the period, forcing her to make four more saves in the process.
  • With less than a minute on the clock, Llopis looked to put Tech back on top, but was unable to beat the keeper and the match went into overtime.
  • Possession was once again dominated by the Panthers in the first overtime period. Tech took four shots to Barry's one in the period, but again went scoreless.
  • The second overtime period saw Tech continue to apply pressure on the Bucs.
  • That pressure paid off in the 107th minute when Daniela Tobon sent a pass into the box that bounced off the head of Llopis and past the diving keeper to give the Panthers a golden goal victory, 2-1.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Florida Tech moves to 12-11-6 all-time against Barry.
  • This was the sixth time the teams have met in the SSC Tournament, and the third win for the Panthers.
 
UP NEXT: Florida Tech advances to the semifinal round of the SSC Tournament and will host fourth-seeded Saint Leo on Thursday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Rick Stottler Field in Melbourne.
