Three Panthers Score in Double Figures in Win Over Puerto Rico-Mayaguez

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Florida Tech women's basketball team's offense showed out again at home, defeating Puerto Rico-Mayaguez, 76-73. Three Panthers scored double-digit points.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

FIRST QUARTER:
  • The defensive got it started with a Sarah Liberatore block on the Bulldogs' first possession.
  • Tech grabbed the first points with a jumper from Divine Guthrie, but Puerto Rico-Mayaguez answered with two straight baskets to take an early 4-2 lead.
  • Mikayla Morin tied it up by forcing free throws and hitting both. The Liberatore kept her success from three from the Flagler game, knocking down another one from the corner. After three minutes of play, the Panthers took the 7-4 lead.
  • Tied at 7-7, Tai Roberts passed it to Liberatore, who found a wide-open Dalma Ehmann in the paint for an easy layup for the 9-7 advantage.
  • A few minutes later, Roberts stole the ball from the Bulldogs and went coast-to-coast with a layup on the other end.
  • Panthers extended their lead to six when Emily Acampora drained a corner three. Tech kept the six-point lead after a mid-range jumper from Roberts with under a minute to play in the quarter.
  • The quarter would finish on a Nadine Johnson steal and a Deirdre Miller right-handed layup.
 
SECOND QUARTER:
  • Miller started the quarter as she finished the first with a layup, putting the Panthers up 20-12
  • Ehmann scores three and Liberatore lays in a basket for a 25-19 advantage.
  • After falling behind 26-25, the Panthers responded as Roberts dished out a stellar pass to Ehmann on the baseline for the basket. Puerto-Rico Mayaguez took back the lead; however, it was short-lived, with Acampora putting Tech back up by cashing in on a shot from beyond the arch.
  • Tech led the rest of the half, getting to the charity stripe and making two defensive steals. The Panthers had a 36-34 advantage at the break.
 
THIRD QUARTER:
  • Ehmann, leading the team in scoring, added a 15-foot jumper from the free-throw line to her total. The Hungary native dealt an assist for another Roberts mid-range jumper a minute later, helping the Panthers to a 6-0 run to begin the third quarter.
  • Tech built their largest lead of the game to 12 over the Bulldogs halfway through the quarter.
  • The Bulldogs closed the gap, going on a 10-0 run on the Panthers, drawing within two points through eight minutes of the quarter.
  • Divine Guthrie ended the stretch with a behind-the-back layup while being fouled. She went on to hit the free throw to finish the three-point play.
  • With a quarter to go, the Panthers led by just one point, 50-49.
 
 FOURTH QUARTER:
  • Morin came out strong for the final quarter, bodying a Bulldogs' defender for the bucket and the foul. Puerto Rico-Mayaguez responded with a three-point play from a beyond-the-arch shot.
  • Anything they can do, Acampora can do better, draining a corner three in the following possession.
  • During the next offensive possession, Ehmman grabbed her sixth offensive rebound and career-high ninth rebound and brought it back up for the bucket and free throw, bringing the Panthers' lead back up to six points.
  • The Bulldogs hit two three-pointers, helping tie the game at 67 a piece with three minutes remaining. A Bulldogs' mid-range jump gave them their first lead since it was 26-25 in the second quarter.
  • Taking charge, Roberts willed her way to a two-point jumper, then drew a foul for two made free throws, grabbing the 71-69 lead.
  • The Panthers kept the lead until time expired. Roberts hit five free throws to seal the 76 – 73 victory.
NOTABLE PANTHERS:
  • Dalma Ehmann was the top point-scorer, tallying 16 points and a career-high nine rebounds., including six offensive rebounds. Defensively, she got a steal and blocked a shot.
  • Tai Roberts went 5-for-12 for 15 points and tied Ehmann with a team-leading nine rebounds.
  • Emily Acampora drained three beyond the arch, helping her earn 14 points.
  • Sarah Liberatore was impressive defensively, blocking two shots and grabbing a steal.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • The Panthers remain undefeated against Puerto Rico-Mayaguez with a 12-0 record.
  • Tech has won all 11 matchups by at least 11 points, six of those matchups by at least 30 points, and three by at least 40 points.
