Panthers' Offensive Explodes in a Run Rule Series Win Over Embry-Riddle

MELBOURNE, Fla. – A day after winning a pitcher's duel, the Florida Tech softball team took the series over Embry Riddle by run rule, putting up nine runs in the first four innings. The Panther offense tallied 11 total hits and knocked two balls out of the park.

STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Ella Niles got her second straight start after her one-hitter on Thursday.
  • Niles allowed a single to the lead-off hitter, then sat down the next three.
  • Florida Tech took its momentum from Thursday, immediately hitting a solo shot from Kelly McLaughlin.
  • In the bottom of the second, the Panthers rolled off four more runs for a 5-0 lead.
  • McLaughlin came up huge again in the second, driving in two more runs with a bases-load single. She then later scored herself on a wild pitch.
  • Embry-Riddle's Leah Oberkehr singled in the top of the fourth, but Miracle caught another runner when she attempted to steal second.
  • Sammy Shortal crushed a long ball to center, leading to a triple, then later scored off a Celeste Casillas single.
  • Panthers' defense stepped up again in the fourth, working a double play after a walk.
  • Florida Tech continued to score in the fourth with a three-run shot off the bat of Mya Ogbodiewgu. Miracle walked, and Hogue singled to set up the homerun.
  • Niles sealed the game in short order, inducing two groundballs and a popout.
 
NOTABLE PANTHERS:
  • In two games against the Eagles, Niles pitched 12 innings, allowing three hits and striking out two. Also, her first two shutouts of the season.
  • Kelly McLaughlin crushed her first homerun of the season and second of her career. In addition, the senior brought home three runs.
  • Ogbodiewgu's dinger in the fourth was her fifth of the season and 11th in her career. She also moved into the team lead with 24 RBI.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • The Panthers now move to an all-time 14-11 against Embry Riddle
  • Panthers have won five of seven series since the Eagles joined SSC ahead of the 2016 season, including all four series played in Melbourne.
  • It's the Panther's ninth time in the year accumulating 10 or more hits in a game.
  • Shortest game of the season (by inning), besting their six-inning win over No. 20 Wilmington on March 5.
 
UP NEXT: The Panthers head on the road to face Eckerd College in St. Petersburg on April 5 and 6. The first game is set for April 5, starting at 6 p.m. ET.
