Softball’s Walk-Off Secures Split With Tiffin

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Florida Tech softball team played two tightly contested games on Wednesday evening and secured a doubleheader split with Tiffin after a walk-off win in game two of the midweek matchup.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Game 1 Final: Florida Tech 1, Tiffin 2
Game 2 Final: Florida Tech 4, Tiffin 3
Records: Florida Tech (12-9, 4-5 SSC), Augusta (10-6, 0-0 GMAC)
Location: Nancy Bottge Field | Melbourne, Fla.

STATS OF GAME 1:
  • Tech got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Ella Niles led the frame off with a single up the middle and Kelly McLaughlin moved her over to second with a sacrifice bunt.
  • A double to left field by Jolie Miracle brought Niles around to score and make it 1-0.
  • Tiffin answered right back in the top of the second inning. A single, an error, and a hit batter loaded the bases with one out for the Dragons.
  • Panther shortstop, Celeste Casillas, made an incredible diving save in shallow left field to record the second out of the inning, but the runner on third base was able to tag up and score to tie the game at 1-1.
  • Tech threatened again in the bottom of the second with runners on second and third and one out, but Tiffin starting pitcher, Claire Feldkamp, retired the next two Panthers with a pop-up to the infield and a groundout escape the jam.
  • A single and back-to-back doubles to start the top of the third inning brought a Dragon across the plate to take a 2-1 lead.
  • With runners on second and third and no outs the Panther infield was forced to be drawn in. Casillas would once again make a tremendous effort defensively with a diving stop on a sharp ground ball, and from her knees throw out the runner at the plate to keep the game at 2-1.
  • Alex Hendrian retired the next two Dragons with a strike out and a pop-up to the catcher to escape the jam with only one run surrendered.
  • Tech's best opportunity to tie the game came in the bottom of the fourth inning with Katie Hogue on third and one out. Hogue tried to score on a ground ball but was thrown out at the plate to keep the game at 2-1.
  • Both pitchers and defenses continued to dominate the hitters for the rest of the game. No runners advanced past second base in the final three innings and Tiffin came away with the 2-1 victory.

STATS OF GAME 2:
  • The Panthers would once again strike first in the bottom of the first inning. Niles once again led off with a single and then stole second. McLaughlin moved her up to third with a single of her own, and Miracle sent Niles across the plate with an RBI single to go up 1-0.
  • A passed ball to the next batter allowed McLaughlin to cross the plate and make it a 2-0 game in favor of Tech.
  • Now with two outs, Miranda Schwartz singled to move Miracle up to third. Schwartz then stole second, which allowed Miracle to score after an errant throw by the catcher to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead.
  • The innings remained scoreless until the top of the fourth. A triple followed by a single for the Dragons cut the lead down to 3-1.
  • In the top of the sixth, Tiffin had the bases loaded with no outs. Coming in relief, Hendrian struck out Bailey Hamilton for the first out, but a single and sacrifice fly from the next two Dragons knotted the game at 3-3.
  • Hendrian worked a scoreless top of the seventh to set the Panthers up for a walk-off in the bottom of the seventh.
  • Ella Niles would find herself on second base with one out after an infield single followed by an errant throw. Another infield single from McLaughlin put runners on the corners.
  • With Miracle at the plate, a wild pitch allowed Niles to sprint home and slide in safely for the walk-off 4-3 victory.
