Offenses Rule Doubleheader As Panthers Earn Series Win

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Florida Tech softball concluded a busy week of action on Saturday afternoon with a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader at Palm Beach Atlantic. After the series began with a no-hitter on Friday night, the bats were front and center on this day as the Panthers rode six extra-base hits to a 9-5 victory in Game One before the Sailfish exploded for 13 runs in the first two innings of Game Two to avoid the series sweep, 14-3.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

GAME ONE:
Final:
Florida Tech 9, Palm Beach Atlantic 5
Records: Florida Tech (15-10, 6-5 SSC) | Palm Beach Atlantic (5-12, 2-6 SSC)
Location: Simpson Field | West Palm Beach, Fla.

STATS OF THE GAME:

  • As they did the night before, the top of the Panther order made things happen right away as Ella Niles reached on a bunt single and Kelly McLaughlin walked.
  • Two batters later, Katie Hogue doubled to plate Niles but McLaughlin was thrown out at the plate.
  • Mya Ogbodiewgu made sure that play would not prove costly as she immediately launched a two-run homer to center to extend the Tech lead to 3-0.
  • The Sailfish got their first hit against Alex Hendrian in the series in the bottom half of the inning through Evoni Rodriguez's single to right.
  • Larken Maseda's single to right put runners at the corners for Bella O'Connor, who brought Rodriguez home thanks to a sacrifice fly.
  • That would be all PBA would add in the frame, however, as Maseda was caught stealing to end the inning.
  • The following inning saw Celeste Casillas and Niles produce back-to-back singles with one out and were rewarded by sprinting home on Jolie Miracle's two-out double to right.
  • Hogue's single to right drove in Miracle and the Panthers had extended their lead to five.
  • After a quiet two innings, the Panther lineup came back to life in the fifth, which Hogue led off with a single.
  • Ogbodiewgu followed with a double that drove in Hogue and Miranda Schwartz was hit by a pitch that put two on for Kathryn Sexton.
  • Sexton came through with a clutch double to left to drive in Ogbodiewgu and move Schwartz to third.
  • Casillas followed with a sacrifice fly that gave the Crimson and Gray a 9-1 lead and it appeared as if Florida Tech were going to earn their second straight five inning win.
  • Rhiannon Sibbett and Alexia Martinez singled to start the bottom of the inning.
  • Sibbett came in to score on a dropped fly ball and Maseda's ensuing double to left brought in Martinez and Rodriguez.
  • Isabella Hernandez's one-out RBI single to left brought PBA to within 9-5 and the game had taken a considerable turn.
  • However, from there, Hendrian retired eight of the final nine hitters to earn the victory.

GAME TWO:
Final: Florida Tech 3, Palm Beach Atlantic 14
Records: Florida Tech (15-11, 6-6 SSC) | Palm Beach Atlantic (6-12, 3-6 SSC)
Location: Simpson Field | West Palm Beach, Fla.

STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Much like Florida Tech had in the first two games of the series, the Sailfish flew out of the gates to secure the result
  • Martinez singled off of Niles to lead off the bottom of the first and then moved to third on a Rodriguez double.
  • A Maseda single to right drove in Martinez and two batters later, Hernandez's single to center was compounded by a fielding error that allowed both runners on base to score.
  • Chloe Nepveux followed with a groundout to short but when Hernandez went to take third on the play, an errant throw allowed her to score.
  • Two more Panther errors in the inning led directly to Sailfish errors and after just one inning, they were already staring at a sizeable deficit.
  • The Crimson and Gray lineup's hot streak continued in the top of the second inning when a two-out Casillas double into the left centerfield gap drove in both Ogbodiewgu and Sexton to put a dent into the PBA lead.
  • The momentum would be short-lived as Martinez, Rodriguez all singled to start the bottom of the inning and chase Niles from the pitcher's circle in the process.
  • O'Connor greeted Lexi Lueger with a bases-clearing double and Hernandez followed with an RBI double that made it a 10-2 Sailfish lead.
  • Madison Schlichte and Sibbett each added to the deluge one-out single added to the deluge with one-out singles to right.
  • When Schlichte scored on a fielder's choice as the second out of the inning was recorded, Florida Tech's deficit had grown to 13-2.
  • O'Connor homered off of Dawn Pawlak to lead off the bottom of the third, while Niles' bunt single in the top of the fourth drove in Casillas to cap the scoring.

  • Alex Hendrian has now thrown a complete game in 14 of her 16 starts this season.
