No.4 Mocs Bite Down on No.20 Panthers in Wednesday Night SSC Matchup

LAKELAND, Fla. – No.20 Florida Tech women's lacrosse ventured out to Lakeland, Fla. to face No.4 Florida Southern in a Sunshine State Conference matchup. After a strong first quarter from the Panthers, the Mocs overpowered Tech to the win by a score of 18-7.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

FIRST QUARTER:
  • Madison Tare of Florida Southern was the first to score 48 seconds into the game.
  • One minute later, Kayla Minton tied the contest for Tech off an assist from Sophia Scichilone.
  • The Moccasins (Mocs), managed to take a two-goal lead scoring at the 11:45 and 10:10 mark of the first to jump ahead 3-1.
  • Both goals for Florida Southern were scored by Kolby Cohen.
  • Minton recorded her second goal of the quarter at 5:22 to make it a 3-2 contest.
  • Jackie Stoller of FSC put the Mocs back up by two with 4:39 to play in the first.
  • Carly Niro managed to score the final goal of the quarter from either side with 2:15 to play to keep it a close contest, 4-3.
  • Niro's goal would come off an assist from Scichilone.
 
SECOND QUARTER:
  • The Second quarter saw the Mocs leave Tech scoreless as FSC scored six unanswered goals to take a 10-3 lead.
  • Hannah Hale played a key role in Southern's offense recording three points from one goal and two assists.
 
THIRD QUARTER:
  • The Mocs tacked on two more goal in the first three minutes of the third to jump ahead 13-3.
  • Caroline Finn successfully converted a free position shot as the Panthers still trailed 12-4.
  • Stoller would score the next two goals, extending the Mocs lead to 14-4 with 4:34 left in the third.
  • Jenna Vetter pushed Southern's lead to 15-4, scoring the final goal of the third as the Panthers trailed by 11 entering the fourth quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER: 
  • Lizzy Christ and Charlotte Hardie opened the fourth quarter as both scored for the Panthers as FSC still led 15-6.
  • Chloe Weber improved the Mocs lead back to 10 goals, 16-6 at 6:56.
  • Minto found the back of the net for the third time in the game with 5:23 left in the fourth as the Panthers deficit was brought to nine goals.
  • Hailey O'Donoghue and Kaylee Stoky scored the final two goals of the game as the Mocs recorded the 18-7 win over Tech.
 
NOTABLE PANTHERS:  
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
  • Florida Tech falls to 0-16 all-time against Florida Southern.
  • Southern outshot the Panthers 29-16 with Tech shooting 12 shots on goal while FSC recorded 25 shots on goal.
  • Techs goalies recorded seven saves while Southern's goalie stopped the ball five times.
  • The Panthers turned the ball over 18 times compared to Florida Southern's 14 turnovers.
  • FSC went 16-17 on clear attempts while the Crimson and Gray were 14-17 on clears.
  • The Mocs won 15 of the 27 total draw controls.
  • Both FSC and Tech were 4-5 on free position shots.
 
 
UP NEXT: The Panthers will return home on Saturday, April 14th to face No.13 Lynn at Rick Stottler Field. The Sunshine State Conference matchup is schedule to begin at 1:00 P.M. prior to the contest Florida Tech will hold its Senior Day Celebration at the field at approximately 12:20 P.M.
