Women’s Basketball Steals the Game from Lynn

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The women's basketball team swiped a season-high 13 steals, leading to a 68-65 win over Lynn on Wednesday.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Final: Florida Tech 68, Lynn 65
Records: Florida Tech (5-7, 2-5 SSC), Lynn (8-6, 2-5 SSC)

FIRST QUARTER:
  • Despite Lynn earning the first possession and basket, Florida Tech responded with a made field goal and a basket of their own. Dalma Ehmann made a nice cut to the center of the paint for an open pass from Kyandra Poitier.
  • Poitier extended the Panthers' lead with a layup a minute later.
  • The lead traded hands multiple times for the rest of the quarter. Lynn drained the game's first three-pointer to go into the second quarter with a 13-11 edge.
 SECOND QUARTER:
  • Lynn again started a quarter with a made layup to go ahead 15-11. However, Tech bounced back as Tai Roberts scored, and Poitier swiped the ball from the Fighting Knights for a layup on the other end, tying the game at 15 apiece
  • After the media timeout, Nadine Johnson recreated the exact play, stealing the ball for a layup for the 17-15 lead.
  • With free throws, the Knights retook the advantage at 21-19 for a short period. Remingtyn Smith entered the for two made field goals, including one from beyond the arch.
  • The Panthers held onto a 28-26 halftime lead with a Divine Guthrie jumper and Roberts free throws.
 THIRD QUARTER:
  • Tech kept the momentum into the second half as Roberts drove into the lane for a layup, increasing the Panthers' lead to four points.
  •  Tied a 32-32, Smith stepped in front of a Lynn pass for a steal and strolled to an easy bucket.
  • Both teams continued to swap who held the advantage over the other team throughout the quarter for 17 lead changes in the game. The Panthers finished the third quarter with a 42-41 edge and never gave it back.
 FOURTH QUARTER:
  •  The Panthers stretched their lead at the start of the final quarter, which was generated by a Roberts steal and a Poitier basket, to 50-44.
  • With three minutes remaining in the quarter, jumpers and free throws from Johnson and Roberts kept the Knights away.
  • Lynn attempted to fight back into the game by fouling Tech and sending them to the line, giving the Knights a chance down three in the final possession. However, Guthrie held firm defensively, and the Knights missed the final shot.
NOTABLE PANTHERS:
  • Tai Roberts led the Panthers, tallying 16 points on 50 percent shooting. Roberts also compiled six rebounds, a team-high five assists, and two steals.
  • Kyandra Poitier was a defensive force, hauling in eight rebounds, including seven defensive rebounds and four steals. She also was stellar offensively, scoring 14 points.
  •  Divine Guthrie also put up double figures with 12 points and three steals.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • The Panthers are 34-24 all-time against the Fighting Knights.
  • Tech is 18-10 all-time at home vs. Lynn and recorded consecutive wins over the Fighting Knights at home for the first time since February 15, 2017, and November 29, 2017.
  • Tech shot over 40 percent the third time, going 25-for-58 from the field.
  • Five Panthers swiped multiple steals, leading to a season-high 13.
