First Career Home Run Sparks Opening Night Victory

GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Panthers' offense impressed, and late-game shutdown pitching sealed the 6-5 victory over Lubbock Christian. Florida Tech softball has won the opening game for three consecutive seasons.

STATS OF THE GAME:
Final: Florida Tech 6, Lubbock Christian 5
Records: Florida Tech (1-0, 0-0 SSC) | Lubbock Christian (1-1, 0-0 LSC)
Location: Gulf Shores Sportplex | Gulf Shores, Ala.

STATS OF THE GAME:
  • Celeste Casillas' stellar night began at the top of the first, doubling to the right field.
  • As a team, Lubbock Christian also started strong, recording three straight hits at the top of the lineup and scoring two runs. Sammy Murphy ended the bottom of the first with two swinging strikeouts.
  • Tech bounced back in the second inning. Freshman Brooklyn Lorenzo launched a two-run shot to center field in her first career at-bat.
  • In her first at-bat since freshman year, pitcher Alex Hendrian kept the inning going with a single. Later in the inning, Chloe Fariello recorded her first collegiate hit and RBI, giving the Panthers the 3-2.
  • Casillas extended the Panthers' advantage by one, striking her second hit in just as many innings.
  • The Lady Chaps retook the lead in the bottom of the second, adding three more runs, two through a long ball.
  • From the third inning onward, Sammy Murphy was lights-out, allowing one hit and striking out six more batters.
  • Dani Sigal led off the fourth, singling up the middle. After a sacrifice bunt and a ground out, Sigel moved into scoring position at third base, setting up Casillas for her third hit and second double.
  • Casillas moved to third on a wild third, then completed the full base path by stealing home for the clinching run.
  • In the circle, Murphy shut the door on any hope for the Lady Chaps, including striking out the side in the bottom of the sixth.
 NOTABLE PANTHERS:
  • Celeste Casillas drove the offense, registering three hits on four at-bats and two RBI on two doubles.
  • Alex Hendrian performed well at the plate, going two-for-three with a run. It's her second career multi-hit game.
  • Sammy Murphy earned her first complete game, pitching all seven innings. The redshirt freshman struck out nine Lady Chaps, which is the most by the Panthers since Melanie Murphy in the 2019 NCAA South Regional game against Mississippi College.
  • Brooklyn Lorenzo smashed her first home run as a Panther in her first plate appearance. Tech's first freshman to hit a home run since Miranda Schwartz in March 2023.
 BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • The Panthers played Lubbock Christian for the second time in program history, and Friday marks the first win.
UP NEXT: The Panthers will face their first-ranked opponent, No. 8 North Georgia, on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. ET. Tech will also play West Alabama following the first game against UNG.
