MELBOURNE, Fla. – On Valentine's Day, Florida Tech Softball spread the love in a dominant 10-2 run-rule victory over Palm Beach Atlantic in the Panthers home and conference opener. The offense saw eight different Panthers tally a hit, including four with multiple.
GAME ONE:
STATS OF THE GAME:
Final: Florida Tech 10, Palm Beach Atlantic 2 (5 innings)
Records: Florida Tech (5-4, 0-0 SSC) | Palm Beach Atlantic (3-2, 0-0 SSC)
Location: Nancy Bottge Field | Melbourne, Fla.
STATS OF THE GAME:
- Despite giving up a hit, Panthers' starter Alex Hendrian got through the first inning scoreless.
- Ella Niles' hot streak continued with a walk in the first but was caught stealing on the base paths, and the Panthers would not earn a run in the first. That would be the first and last inning the Panthers were held off the scoreboard.
- In the top of the second, Hendrian not only produced three outs again but did so through two strikeouts.
- In the following half-inning, Tech would put its stamp on the game. The leadoff batter, Miranda Schwartz, scorched a ball up the middle. Schwartz moved to third on a Haley Rider double and scored on a Brooklyn Lorenzo single down the left-field line.
- With two outs, Samantha Shortal laced a triple to right center in her first at-bat on the season, bringing home Rider and Lorenzo.
- After a Niles and Chloe Fariello walk, Celeste Casillas put down a grounder through the middle for two more runs. Heading into the third, the Crimson and Gray led 5-0.
- While Palm Beach Atlantic could not get anything going in the third, Florida Tech crossed home plate three more times.
- Schwartz sparked the momentum again with another single to center field. Rider walked, then Lorenzo doubled to right center, scoring Schwartz.
- Base loaded with one out, Niles poked the ball through the Sailfish's shortstop and third baseman, and Fariello reached on an error for two more runs. Panthers had an 8-0 edge before the fourth inning.
- The Sailfish fought back, keeping the game alive with two runs in the fourth.
- However, the Panthers responded by having runners on second and third on back-to-back singles, setting up Lorenzo for a sacrifice fly. The Panthers lead 9-2 in the fifth inning.
- Hendrian bounced back in the fifth, earning two quick outs before letting up a double. The Aurora, Colorado native slammed the door on the Sailfish the next batter by way of strikeout.
- Needing one run to end the game, Niles placed a perfect bunt single down the third base line, and Fariello walked. The two runners on base flustered the Sailfish pitcher, causing her to toss two wild pitches, eventually scoring Niles.
