Olivia Going '20 '21 was a member of the women's lacrosse team and earned her bachelor's degree in accounting and master's degree in accounting and financial forensics. She is currently working as a Forensic and Integrity Services Senior Consultant at Ernst & Young.
Based on the degree you graduated with, why did you choose this direction for your education, and is it something you have always wanted to pursue?
I was interested in accounting but wanted to do something other than your typical audit or tax. I learned Florida Tech had a master's in accounting & financial Forensics, which intrigued me! I now work at Ernst & Young in their Forensics & Integrity Services practice.
Favorite Florida Tech athletic memory?
In my freshman year, we played Florida Southern (the first time), and we came one goal short in overtime of winning. That day was such a thrill, and we never came that close to beating them again.
Favorite Florida Tech campus memory?
Walking to class on a nice day.
Most significant accomplishment since leaving Florida Tech?
Since leaving Florida Tech, one of my most significant accomplishments has been running two half marathons. Training for and completing these races required dedication, discipline, and perseverance.
What are some of the challenges and successes that you face in your field?
One of the challenges in my field is adapting to different working styles within a team. Every individual has their approach to communication, problem-solving, and workflow. However, recognizing and embracing these differences is one of the greatest successes. By fostering an environment of flexibility and collaboration, teams can leverage diverse strengths, improve creativity, and enhance overall productivity.
How has being a collegiate athlete prepared you for your current work? What traits did you take from the field/court/pool that helped you be successful?
Working on a team is a big part of my job. Being on a sports team my whole life, especially for five years at Florida Tech, prepared me well for entering the working world. As a collegiate athlete, I learned patience, diligence, public speaking, confidence, and many other traits.
Describe the main takeaway from Florida Tech that prepared you for the job market.
You will learn a lot about what you do at your job and on the job. Some of what you know in your classes will apply, but it's more learning by doing. Be open to opportunities and be willing to learn!
Advice you would give a current scholar-athlete?
Have an open mind and a good attitude. You will be in a much better position if you are willing to work with people, even if you find it difficult sometimes. Don't be afraid to ask questions, but make sure you take the time to think through a potential solution before you do!
