Panther Bats Overcome Early Deficit To Win Series Opener At Eckerd

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – In any game, the ultimate question isn't how, it's did you and while Florida Tech didn't have the smoothest of starts in Friday night's series opener at Eckerd, they did enough to keep themselves in the game. Then, between the third and sixth innings, Tech's offense came to life and, with the aid of Triton miscues, put the game out of reach to earn their third straight win, 12-7.

STATS OF THE GAME:
Final: Florida Tech 12, Eckerd 7
Records: Florida Tech (22-17, 12-10 SSC) | Eckerd (9-25, 4-12 SSC)
Location: St. Petersburg, Fla. | Turley Athletic Complex

STATS OF THE GAME:

  • The Tritons struck in the opening inning against Florida Tech starter Jacob Pino when, with two out, an RBI double off the bat of Christian Cabina and a Dylan Escobar RBI single put Eckerd ahead 2-0.
  • The Panthers responded immediately in the top half of the second against Tritons starter Rocco Calise, which began with a leadoff walk to Pedro Figueroa.
  • An Akhil Nimmala single and an Adrian Dominguez single loaded the bases for Anthony Fimiano, whose sacrifice fly brought home Figueroa to put Tech on the board. However, the Panthers would be held to just that one run in the inning.
  • Kam Gelwick led off the inning with a single and then moved to third when a ball off the bat of Cole Schumaker got away from Dominguez at second.
  • With runners at the corners and nobody out, Joey Bazydlo lifted a sacrifice fly to center that plated Gelwick, restoring Eckerd's lead to two
  • Luis Garrido immediately followed with a two-run homer to left.
  • Once again, the Crimson and Gray immediately countered as Conner Wiggins reached on a Dawson Jones throwing error to start the frame.
  • Noah Burke made sure that mattered, launching a two-run homer to right for his sixth long ball of the year.
  • Figueroa singled to left center with one out, then moved to second on a two-out walk to Dominguez.
  • Fimiano's RBI single just over the head of Jones brought Florida Tech within one and Jaden Hill's double down the right field line gave the Panthers the lead, 6-5.
  • Tech took advantage of Triton mistakes in the top of the fourth, which began with Wiggins being hit by a pitch.
  • A botched pickoff attempt allowed Wiggins to advance to third. He then came home on a high chopper to second that Burke beat out down the line.
  • Burke advanced to second on a wild pitch and following a one-out walk to Figueroa, Calise's night was done. Reliever Max Folkman entered the game and walked Nimmala, loading the bases for Dominguez.
  • Dominguez's bloop to shallow center fell in, allowing Burke to hurry home with Florida Tech's second run of the inning.
  • Wiggins manufactured a run on his own in the top of the fifth by drawing a one-out walk, stealing second with two out and Cole Patrick at the plate. Patrick then did his part by bringing Wiggins home with an RBI single through the side to increase the lead to 9-5.
  • Eckerd would get one back as Cabina led off the bottom of the inning with a solo blast but that's all they would muster against Pino in the inning as the right-hander finished his night with his third strikeout.
  • The Crimson and Gray would tack on further in the top of the sixth, starting with Dominguez's leadoff walk.
  • Fimiano and Hill each singled to load the bases for Gabe Garrett, who walked to drive in a run.
  • Wiggins then took one for the team, as his hit by pitch plated Fimiano to make it 11-6, chasing Folkman from the game.
  • Figueroa capped his and the Panthers' night with an RBI single in the top of the eighth.
  • Eckerd put together a mini-rally in the bottom of the ninth, scratching across a run in the process but Payton McIntosh rebounded to strike out the game's final two batters to secure the win.

NOTABLE PANTHERS:

  • Eight of nine Panther starters recorded a hit, 13 in total.
  • Anthony Fimiano led the Tech lineup with three hits.
  • Noah Burke drove in three runs, the third time he's done so this season.
  • Jaden Hill drove in multiple runs for the second consecutive game and had his third multi-hiot game in the past four.
  • Conner Wiggins swiped his tenth base of the season.
  • Jacob Pino earned his fourth win of the year, allowing four earned runs on eight hits and 107 pitches over five innings.
  • Brayden DiCerb threw two scoreless innings in relief of Pino with a pair of strikeouts.
  • Payton McIntosh allowed just one unearned run over the final two innings against his former team, striking out three.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • All-time vs. Eckerd: 72-57
  • Tech is now 32-21 at Eckerd since 1991.
