Women’s Lacrosse Wraps Up Regular Season With Loss to No. 3 Florida Southern

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Florida Tech women's lacrosse team kept the game close until the fourth quarter when Florida Southern outscored the Panthers 7-1, causing Tech to lose 22-10.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

FIRST QUARTER: 
  • The Panthers' impressive start against No. 3 Mocs saw them grab the first draw control and the lead. Clare McGuire picked up the draw control and the opening goal.
  • Florida Southern responded less than a minute later with a score at 12:16, tying the game at 1-1.
  • Tech held Florida Southern off the scoreboard for the next seven minutes, causing two turnovers and two saves by Bridget Robinson.
  • While holding off the Moccasins, the Panthers retook the lead on a Gillian Craig goal with less than six minutes remaining in the quarter.
  • Again, Florida Southern tied the game the following possession, using just 28 seconds.
  • The Mocs ended the quarter on a 3-1 run. Sofie Bender found Charlotte Hardie for the final Panther score at 2:13. Florida Southern led 5-3 after the first 15 minutes.  
SECOND QUARTER: 
  • At the start of the second, the Mocs netted three unanswered goals, increasing their lead to 8-3.
  • Tech bounced back by Craig and Sophia Scichilone, finding the back of the net at 10:05 and 7:34.
  • Both Craig and Scichilone would each earn another goal before the quarter end, keeping the Panthers within three points after one half at 10-7.
  • Robinson also helped, making two back-to-back massive saves on a free-position opportunity late in the half.
 THIRD QUARTER: 
  • Four women-up opportunities were successful in the first seven minutes as Florida Southern capitalized on two and Florida Tech on two. But the Mocs did extend their lead to four on an even goal at 10:24.
  • The Mocs ended the quarter adding two more points to their lead, having a 15-9 edge going into the fourth quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER: 
  • Despite a save from Robinson 39 seconds into the quarter, Florida Southern continued to find the net, chalking up two more.
  • Caroline Finn ended the Mocs run, receiving a Scichilone pass to record the Panthers' 10th goal.
  • Florida Southern built on their lead, connecting on five more goals before the end of regulation for a 22-10 victory.
 NOTABLE PANTHERS: INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
  • Florida Tech had the edge in ground balls (17-15) and saves (9-6)
  • Florida Southern recorded more shots (37-22) and draw controls (29-7)
  • The Panthers were 19-of-21 on clears, while the Mocs were 11-of-15.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Scichilone's five points moved her past Allie Modica (2015-2017) for third place on the program's career points list.
  • Carly Niro also passes Allie Modica (2015-2017) but for fourth on the program's career assists list.
  • Charlotte Hardie's one caused turnover was enough to become the seventh Panther to cause 70 turnovers in their career.
  • Craig's four goals surpassed Allie Modica (2015), Sam Schiano (2018), and Lauren Tybor (2018) for the most goals in a single season by a Panther. Craig has the fifth most goals in a season.
UP NEXT: The Panthers made the SSC Championships as the sixth seed and await who they will play in the quarterfinals on Saturday, April 19th, on the road.
