LAKELAND, Fla. – The Florida Tech women's basketball team started strong but ultimately fell to Florida Southern 79-59 in Lakeland on Wednesday night.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

FIRST QUARTER:
- Following two misses from Florida Southern, Elif Bayrak dropped the first points of the game on stopping midrange jumper.
- She came back a minute later and drilled a three-pointer from the elbow, increasing Tech's advantage to 5-0 with 7:13 on the clock
- The Mocs scored six of the next eight points to be within one at 4:44.
- Then Florida Southern took the lead on a triple that started a 8-0 with a minute left.
- Back from injury, Nandinkhusel Nyamjav drained a deep shot to end the run.
- However, the Mocs answered with five more points to end the first quarter.
SECOND QUARTER:
- Florida Southern continued to hold Tech, extending their lead to 23-12 three and a half minutes into quarter two.
- During that time, the Panthers defense held the Mocs offense two minutes without a bucket, including a Mikayla Morin steal.
- Once Florida Southern created a 13-point difference, Tech fought back starting with a Tai Roberts layup followed by a Bayrak steal which turned into a fastbreak layup from Remingtyn Smith.
- At 1:43, Smith was the one to swipe a steal and dish it off to Roberts for a corner triple to cut the Mocs lead to six.
- However, the Mocs scored six unanswered before Nyamjav hit a jumper and the and-one free throw the for a 36-27 halftime score.
THIRD QUARTER:
- Smith sparked the Panthers early with a transition three, then finished at the rim to cut the deficit to single digits at 39-30.
- Roberts took over the middle stretch, converting a putback, knocking down a fast-break triple, and later scoring off a steal to push Florida Tech two within two points at 7:14.
- Amanda Ogbonna dominated on both ends with a block, a defensive board, and back-to-back fast-break layups to give the Panthers a one-point deficit with 2:57 remaining.
- The Panthers' defense forced multiple turnovers, turning steals by Ogbonna and Roberts into transition points.
- Tech used an 11–2 run to flip a seven-point deficit into a one-point advantage.
- Florida Southern again finished the quarter well with five points to lead 51-45 heading into the fourth.
FOURTH QUARTER:
- Florida Southern opened the quarter with a layup to extend the deficit before Nyamjav answered with a clutch three
- Bayrak followed with another triple to keep the Panthers within striking distance of five points.
- After a Mocs' three and a layup pushed the margin back, Smith and Morin attacked the paint for key buckets to trim the Mocs' lead back to five hallway through the quarter.
- Florida Southern converted at the line and hit from deep twice, stretching the advantage to 65-57 despite a Nyamjav jumper inside.
- Morin knocked down a pair of free throws to cut into the deficit, yet Florida Southern responded with another three and a second-chance basket to push the lead into double digits.
- Late steals led to additional Mocs free throws secured the 79-59 victory.
NOTABLE PANTHERS:
- Tai Roberts was masterful making seven of her nine shots for 16 points while also grabbing four rebounds and a steal.
- In her return to the court, Nandinkhusel Nyamjav tallied 11 points, three rebounds and a steal in just 15 minutes.
- Remingtyn Smith scored nine points, dished eight assists and swiped three steals.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
- Remingtyn Smith with the most assists in a game by a Panther since Hannah Roney dished out 10 on February 5, 2022, versus Nova Southeastern.
- Smith also reached 100 career steals.
